I didn't get any of the text until I switched to IE, and even then the spacing was messed up on a Mac. The source specifies a non-standard font, which might be part of the problem. More to the point, it uses a lot of Javascript, and a lot of the Javascript looks like it uses the MS-specific "dialect". Sometimes this can cause computers that don't use those proprietary commands to freeze (even other versions of Windows). Just wanted to send a note in case anyone else had problems viewing the site. If anyone knows the site owners, perhaps a gentle word suggesting browser cross-compatability might be in order? The Natural World and Medicine in the Middle Ages 2. Herbals and "Tacuinum Sanitatis" 3. "Tacuinum Sanitatis" 4. Physiologus 5. Bestiaries It has lots of plates of manuscript pages in colour and makes a very handy reference for illuminations of plants and animals. It also has lengthy discussion on the symbolism of the various plants and animals used in manuscripts, something else handy to know when working on illuminations. Well worth owning, if you ask me. Ardal of Antioch Shire of Hartstone Aethelmearc Greetings! Please pass this along to your scribal friends. I just returned from Baltimore, where there is an AWESOME exhibit at the Walters Art Museum called "The Book of Kings: Art, War and the Morgan Library's Medieval Picture Bible". This book was dismantled for rebinding (as well as for producing a facsimile copy) and is on loan for this exhibit, through Dec. 29, 2002. It is a 13th-century French illuminated book of Old Testament stories, with calligraphed commentary added later by European and Islamic scholars, as the book ended up in the hands of a Persian sultan at some point. The display is quite good - they have put the individual pages in clear glass boxes so that you can see them clearly (and they don't yell at you if you lean on the glass!), have good descriptive info with the pages, then some of the pages have been enlarged and reproduced as wall hangings, which are clear enough to see minute details. They also have many other books of hours and bibles and other illuminated books on display in the same rooms along with these pages, and other medieval objects (like reliquaries and armor) on display near the pages that have similar items depicted in them. They also have a facsimile copy of the complete book on display in one of the rooms so that you can look at the whole thing in the correct order (the complete facsimile copy was not on sale in the gift shop, only the catalog for the exhibit, which is still very nice). The rest of the museum is also well worth visiting - they have a marvelous collection of migration era, dark ages, Byzantine, medieval and renaissance paintings and artifacts, and *lots* more that I didn't have time to see. Lots of nice stained glass, furniture, metalworking, and lots of paintings. If you or anyone else can break away in the next couple of weeks (they are closed Dec. 24 & 25) to attend this exhibit, it is well worth it. On Saturday, admission to the museum is free before 1:00pm; otherwise the cost for adults is $8, "young adults" & college students is $6, children 17 & under are free. The hours are Tuesday-Sunday, 10:00am-5:00pm. When I was there for the opening symposium, the curator told us, IIRC, that the book was currently disbound and that they were not sure what the intentions were. The folks at the Pierpont Morgan will be making the decision after the pages are returned to them. The Walters curator didn't even seem sure that the book would be rebound. No mention was made of any intention to produce another fascimile at the seminar. (There is already one.) This particular illuminated book holds a special place in my heart. When I was in college, getting my art degree (at OSU), I took a graduate level course on Illuminated Books & Manuscripts, taught by Professor Melnikas*. My research paper for that class was on the "Crusader's Bible." Oh for the chance to actually see it 'in person' *sigh*. Wistfully, Fionnseach *Dr. Melnikas was later arrested by InterPol for having stolen and attempting to sell on the black market, a number of folios/manuscripts he had stolen from the Vatican Library. :( - -~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~- ~=Sister Fionnseach du Lochielle=~ Not to have, but to give; Chronicler/Web - Shire of Dernehealde Not to take, but to receive.
