It will be a full day! The hardest part will be deciding which classes to take. Hope to see you there! Conna Early Gothic Calligraphy (2 hours), Duchess Alethea. An Introduction to Wash and Color (1 hour), H.L. Siobhan. Beginner-level class on basic wash technique and color mixing. Wash in Medieval Illuminations (1 hour), H.L. Siobhan. (This is not a Medieval laundry class) A look at period sources of illuminations done with wash. Using Wash Techniques in Illumination (2 hours), H.L. Siobhan. This is a more advanced class. Learn how to use wash techniques to create chainmail, cloth drapery, and more. Students need to know how to illuminate or have taken the beginning wash class. Limit 12 students. Background Embellishment for Illuminators (2 hours) H.L. Siobhan. (MSCR245 in the RUSH numbering system.) This is an advanced class; limit 12 students. Heraldic Art (1 hour), Ms. Olga. An overview of differing heraldic art styles across time and place. This will not be a formal class, we will have a round-table discussion. Writing Scroll Texts (1 hour), H.L. Sherry Foxwell. A walk through the process of writing a scroll text. Intro to Preprints (2 hours), Lady Sorcha and Lord Uther. An absolute beginners class that explains how to begin scribal work for Calontir. Lots of hand holding. Materials will be provided for the first 15 people; others are welcome to listen and watch from the side. Intro to Original Scrolls (1 hour), H.L. Conna. Intermediate class. You've painted lots of preprints. Take the next step. Learn how to lay out an original scroll. We'll discuss basic style research, paper choices, and materials needed to produce original scrolls. Heraldese for Scribes (1 hour), Countess Lyriel. How to read device blazons when you get them for scrolls. There will be a handout with pointers on where to go for more complex charges. Acanthus leaves (1 hour) Lady Sorcha. Intermediate. Step-by-step process on how to paint acanthus leaves. Drawing Illumination for Those Who Say They Can't Draw (1 hour) H.L. Seona ferch Angharad. Breaking down an Italian Renaissance picture for people who are unsure of their drawing capabilities. Class limit: 12. White vine (1 hour) Lady d'Javaudan. White vine is NOT leaves and vine and it is NOT white work. It is a style most commonly used in Italy and is also known as voided vines, because the vines and leaves and flowers are white, and painting is done around them. Paper and pencil are all you'll need to learn these designs. Class limit: 10. Intermediate Leaf and Vine (1 hour) Mistress Enid nicEoin. For those of you who are already familiar with leaf and vine basics including drawing (or tracing) leaf shapes, painting, and whitework. This class will discuss the wide variety of leaf and vine styles that were used in period, how they were used in combination with other illumination forms such as acanthus leaves, and other aspects of leaf and vine design. Several handouts with samples will be provided. Some hands-on sketching if time allows so bring pencil and sketch paper. Class limit 15. Knot Work (1 hour) Lady d'Javaudan. There are many ways to layout and plan knotwork. Lady d'Javaudan has one that is relatively easy for many beginners to understand, and is very flexible for varying the patterns, fitting spaces, and designing Book of Kells, Durrow, and other forms as needed (but if you already know one method, and it isn't this one, it could scramble your brains! If you aren't a beginner, come prepared!) Graph paper will be provided. Bring your pencils. Class limit: 10. White Work (1 hour) Mistress Enid nicEoin. The classic medieval way to enhance bars, leaves, and other other shapes using doodles! The class will cover some of the basic shapes and forms used in whitework (and red-work, and yellow work and other variations that use similar techniques) as well as discussion on how to interpret what you see in period model pages. This is primarily going to be a lecture class but pencil and sketch paper may be helpful (or pastel gel pens and dark paper, if you have them!) in case we have time for some hands-on work. (Teacher will supply paints, if we get that far) Class limit: 15 =================================================================== To unsubscribe from this list, send email to with a blank Subject: line and unsubscribe scribes in the body of the message. You know, I keep seeing the various kingdoms posting their scribal symposium class list, and I really wish I could make all the classes. The teachers have done a lot of work in researching their techniques and historical information, it would be really nice if we could set all those class handouts converted to PDF files, or such, and have them available on websites for all to view. Especially if the program is held too far for us to travel to. Another alternative, begin making copies of the handouts in sets of publications, the 'Kingdom of 'XYZ' Scribal Proceedings, year ASxx'; like the Heralds 'Proceedings' which is published each year at the Knowne World Heraldic and Scribal Symposium. Consider the publication a fund raiser for your kingdom scribal coffers. Meanwhile I challenge each of you who have a class handout to turn it into an article for the next issue of the Knowne World Heraldic and Scribal Sympsosium 'Proceedings'... generally the Symposium is held in June, so plan for a March/April submit date. And if anyone's interested in doing it they can probably get the guy who runs the Free Trumpet Press to carry the scribal proceedings as well (he handles all the KWHS proceedings). But he also does it as a labor of love more than a money making venture. I'm not sure such a publication would raise much money. I don't have the notes available for my classes in a scanned format, but I do make CDs available of the images for anyone who asks. Tetchubah "A great warrior, hmm? There are usually heraldry, names and scribal sections. Our price was $7 per set, and our profit margin was about $2.00 per issue. I can dig up the figure if need to, but I think it was around $2-300. profit, and that stayed in the branch, from issues sold at the event, with a donation to the kingdom purses. $200. can buy a lot of kingdom scroll paints!! Once the branch sells their initial set at the event, the masters would go to Free Trumpet Press (FTP), and copies are made. Too much color in the issue would probably have to be limited as cost prohibitive. FTP maintains a price list on the heralds website as a PDF file, and sells back-issues, as well as what he sells while onsite at an event (generally Knowne World Heraldic and Scribal and big wars, such as Pennsic). He told me that he usually makes enough over cost selling the issues to mostly pay for his expenses at events. I guess my idea is that if kingdom scribal symposiums could get 10-20 good articles, and combine them into an booklet, they could make the profit off the first issue sets sold on site. Then, when the masters go to the Free Trumpet Press, the issue is now available to a wider market for a longer time, as well as giving FTP new stock to peddle. It could be a win-win situation. Two challenges: * get someone to be the editor of the event issue and get the copies made, and * get folks to submit articles, and early enough to have the booklet on site to sell. It's worth considering for anyone autocrating a Kingdom Symposium. Hillary (whose sometimes miss'es my first career in retail.) __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!?
