My personal favorite is the rapid-o-graph pen series, but they are pricey, very delicate and can travel inconsistently, due to chamber presures. Someone turned me onto a throwaway pen a while back, the Pigma 'Micron' pens. I don't like them for a complete handmade scroll, but they do well in a pinch, when you need a quick fix, or for charters and promisories. I doubted the company claims on waterproof feature, so looked up the website for further details, yep they say it's waterproof, acid free: http://www.gellyroll.com/products/pens/pigmamicron/pigmamicron.html Keep scribing, Hillary, Ansteorra __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? That's too bad. The skins I've always gotten from them are thin, yes (I happen to like them that way, personal taste) but they've been a dream on which to work. They have required very little extra prep work and have taken color and ink like a dream. I'm always willing to try new sources though and the one you listed sounds intriguing. Okay I bought my first metal calligraphy set, as opposed to the fountain pens and calligraphy markers I learned with.

I am having a big problem, or two rather.  The nib rocks in the pen holder, making control interesting, or the nib will fall out completely (as into the inkwell).  I have tried rebending the metal tabs inside with off and on success.

So, is it my nib holder or is this just a common problem?  My mother said she had the same problem 30+ years ago in High school with the exact same set up.  Are there nib holders that have been updated since then?  Or should I just skip this set up and go straight to learning how to cut my own reeds and quills?

Thank you

I have tried rebending the metal tabs inside with off and on success. So, is it my nib holder or is this just a common problem?<< Kiara -- This sounds like it might be the kind of holder that has a round metal end with a "+" cut in it -- which has always looked like a badly-designed pen holder to me. There are lots of different holders out there, and I don't usually have this problem with the kinds I use. The nibs are supposed to seat firmly in the holder -- are you pushing them far enough in? (Don't break the nibs trying, though!) I wouldn't skip learning to use metal nibs -- I think it's a valuable skill-set and learning quills/reeds will likely be much easier if you're used to the dip pens first. Your best bet is to find a largish art store, find the section where they sell calligraphy supplies -- most places at least will sell Speedball nibs and holders if nothing else -- and buy the different kinds they have -- they'll often sell 2 or 3 kinds. They usually don't cost more than $1-2 each. See what works best for you! I've bought some of the Caran D'Ache "Grey Plastic Holders" from www.johnnealbooks.com, and I really like them. (If you'd rather order holders online, they have lots of types in their catalog -- click on "Holders".) I've also had good luck with the pointy-ended black plastic holders as well, but they eventually need replacing when they stop gripping the nib firmly. Good luck! :) Christopher - ------------------------------------------ Ld.
