The context is in making FABRIC dyes. It should NOT be considered documentation for ink, but merely a pointer for research. RanthulfR In the M.I.T.’s translation of the Plictho, they mention the following “gallotannic acid” dyes as used to achieve browns to black with an iron in 1548 Venice: Listed by common name, species name (Plictho name in Venetian Italian) Gallnuts, swelling on Mediterranean oak, Quercus lusitanica, (Galla, Galetto) Black alder, Alnus glutinosa (Honaro) Blackberry, Rubus fructicosus (Ruxo) Sumac or Redoul, Coriaria myrtifolia (Rozza) Sage, Salvia officinalis, (Salvia) Vallonea from the leaves of the acorn cups on the Quercus aegilops (Valonia) Walnut, Juglans regia (Noce) - -- VISIT RandyAsplund.com To see a Universe of art ranging from Magic: The Gathering to Star Trek and Medieval Manuscripts: Original Art & Prints for sale! I am assuming clam shells are period palettes, but does anyone have any references to the actual usage of shells besides pictures? Thanks, in advance, for any help!! I am teaching a class tomorrow with period pigments; I have never used the crystals. Is there something specific I have to do or do I just get them wet and use the sticky liquid? Any immediate help would be fantabulously appreciated. By the time we were ready to use it we had a nice gooey paste...... yum! I brought a nylon stocking to sift it but it looked like being a very messy proposition in the classroom, so I just drained out some of the clear stuff from the top and threw the rest away. Not as cost efficient but I had a THOUSAND things to deal with (there was a full kit included) and it was so much easier. We mixed it up with their pigments and it stuck to the page fine. Anyway, thanks for all who responded, just wanted to let you know it worked fine.
