Winesburg-Balogh" Subject: Re: [scribes]: technical pens I like to keep a set of 7 Koh-I-Noor rapigograh pens on my drafting table. I find the variety of sizes availiable handy for different situations. The smallest is .25 and sometimes clogs with drying ink on the tip if I am using it very much, but a wipe with a soft cloth and a gentle tap works well. I had the same set for 6 years with no problems. They are easy to clean and I can leave ink in them for several weeks of non use. I know, "bad artist, bad!" I recently had to replace the whole set because I did something stupid. After our move to another state, I decided I should take them apart for complete cleaning. Not a big deal. I was careful to keep the parts separate. As I was walking back into the studio with the carefully separated parts on a tray, I triped and they went flying. Well, as you may have guessed, not all the parts are the same or interchangeable. I did some guessing as to what went to what and put them all back together. One worked fine but two leaked. Rather than risk any other leaks I decided to replace the whole set. We saved $30.00 by ordering them from a supplier online rather than the local over priced store we have in town. The one thing I have noticed is the pen body is splitting right where the nib and ink cartridge screw in. (it turns in the same direction as the lid) I plan to contact the company about it, but also still have the old ones. Also, if I had to, I could wrap a small piece of masking tape around it without it effecting my grip. The black ink has an archival rating and stood up well to my own test of putting it on the dashboard of the car for a week. (In southern California, summer) That was several years ago and I haven't checked for any changes in formula. And the nib and the case should be color coded or marked so that you know which goes with which. I also use a 7 pen set of Rapidograph pens, and I take them apart en masse and clean them all the time without keeping the pieces from each pen separate. I've never had a problem with them leaking after my putting them back together. My pens have the nib sizes color coded - tan is the smallest size, then yellow or grey and so on. The nib itself has that color around the bottom of the wire, and then the case has that color around the nib collar. They will tend to leak as they get older, though. I've had this set for nearly 15 years and so far so good, but my sister gave me a set she had which is much older and they leak plenty, so I don't use them much. I think the newer pens are less prone to leakage than the older style (although the older ones are more aesthetic to look at IMO). My first rapidograph from high school died within 2 years - after an unfortunate incident between going through the washer AND dryer, and meeting my mother's clothing. (My ears still ring from that chewing-out)

Following that, I kept a 5-pen set from Rotring as a Christmas gift during high school, which lasted through college. However, as time wore on, no amount of cleaning was getting the ink to flow as well, or at all (no blockages, just wear and tear from 4 1/2 years of use).

These days my preferences are more towards the cheaper and disposable sort - Staedtler makes a good series of drafting pens, available at any Staples, in waterproof ink and varied nib widths. Likewise, for super-fine lines, I tried a crafter's pen once (available at Michael's), however, a couple of trips on an airplane brought that pen's livelihood to a close. I now use a microfine Sakura pen, which still gives crisp waterproof lines....

....and if I need to make a nice crisp straight line in paint or pigmented/natural ink, I've been known to crack out my ruling pen and/or compass attachment/bezier curve.

I'm recently back from a trip to Ireland (it was my dream vacation trip!). On one of our trips into Dublin, we visited Trinity College. And we saw the Book of Kells. First hand. Drooling over the case. Spent nearly an hour looking at it, the Book of Durrow and a couple other manuscripts. There were hardly any other visitors in the room, so we got lots of time to study/be awestruck/drool! Of course, I forgot my scribal notebook and couldn't write down any of the details I wanted to remember. :-( But it was still one of the highlights of my trip. :-) To be able to see the actual manuscripts, see the finest of details (we were in awe of how tiny the lines were, how perfect the spirals were) and have all the time in the world to do it was wonderful. *sigh* Can't wait to go back again.
