But I think it is correct. The Bar and Ivy style predates the fashion for "black hours" by about 150 years. I am a big fan of "black hours" and have never seen one done in this style. They are almost always done in Acanthus or Trompe l'oeil as you have noticed. So I guess what I am saying is: Bar-and-Ivy = Gothic, "Black Hours" = Renaissance. But like I say, your actual mileage may vary. :-) Cystennin - -----Original Message----- From: KMcWhyte@aol.com [mailto:KMcWhyte@aol.com] Sent: Monday, September 30, 2002 11:10 AM To: scribes@castle.org Cc: ekscribes@yahoogroups.com Subject: [scribes]: Black Hours, Revisited I know we've discussed the subject before, but... Out of curiosity - are there any examples out there of "bar and ivy" (esp. ivy) done in the Black Hours style? I've seen acanthus leaf and miniatures galore in one collection, and what looked Flemish in the other. Any info would be appreciated... Welcome to the list, Amelot.

For general learning of any part of C&I,  this list is one of the best resources.  You need only ask a question and you will often get several answers.  Some might be sent to you privately, but most are sent back to the list.

Do you have a specific period of illumination you particularly like a lot??  That would be your best place to get started.  Also, as far as on-line references, know that there are many.  One of my favorites is in your own country, but I have recently gotten a new computer and haven’t transferred my list of favorites, so cannot pass it on to you.  It is an Antiphonal at your National Library (I think, or is it Museum??).  Try a search for it.  It is totally awesome late period Italian style.  Lots of lovely gold leafing.

Hi there!

My name is Amelot d'Akeney (Melanie Buckley).  I live in Politarchopolis, Lochac (Canberra, Australia) and have been active in the SCA for about 6 years.  I've just joined the list as I've decided I want to start learning to be a scribe (is this a smart move??).  I'm particularly interested in illumination but would like to try my hand at calligraphy as well.  Looking forward to reading all of your words of wisdom!
