Take a look at this eBay auction: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=906526386 I think that this might be a particularly unusual piece. You don't find islamic manuscripts with this kind of detail, or realistic representation, very often. Click on the "supersize" option - it's really fantastic how detailed this particular "squashed bug" is (although it's certainly not what we normally refer to as "squashed bug style" which is European.) I was one of about 30 folk from Germany who took the train up to the A.S. XXI event at Wik Castle... it took us just over 24 hours from Frankfurt to Stockholm... and the last hour was within sight of the station -- the switches in the station had frozen and they couldn't get trains out!! We have T-shirts that say "I survived Nordmark Investiture A.S. -XXI" -- since that was the WARMEST it got, Celsius!! I have to say it was one of the most fun events, though. The castle is a dream (unless you want to cook a feast there... as I recall, there really was no kitchen). The feast the Nordmarkers provided was quite fantastic... didn't start until nearly 9pm and had 23 separate cold courses!! All delicious. Then, everyone danced until about 2 or 3am. The moonlight on the frozen lake behind the castle was totally breathtaking. I can just imagine how inspired people will be for a Scribal Symposium. Wish I could make it!! After reading all of the posts a few weeks ago about the Codices Illustres book I emailed my Mom & sister to tell them that if they had not bought anything for my birthday that this book would be VERY well appreciated. Well, today is the big day and despite the fact that my Mom & sister are in California for a wedding my brother brought me the book. It weighs a ton and so far I have only flipped through the first 297 pages (out of 504) I can say that there are a lot of images I am familiar with and A LOT that I have never seen. I think this book will be thoroughly worn in quickly. I cant say this for sure yet, as I have only had it in my possession for a couple of hours and most of that was family time, but I think if I were to save one book from a fire this one might be it. It seems to cover nearly everything, or at least touch on everything. OK I am logging off now to page through my book. Have a great weekend.
