I love this paint manufacturer... in addition to loving their paints, my sentimental sappy side loves that it is still owned by the same family that started the business over 100 years ago. Anyway, some of the colors on your pallette are unfamiliar to me, namely permanent carmine (I am familiar with Carmine, but I'm not sure if this one is too staining) and English Venetian Red. So I'm not sure about being redundant here... Also, if you are looking for advice in terms of period colors, I am brand new to this aspect of painting, so I only speak from my general background of watercolor painting.... On the white, I was always told (I rarely use white) that Chinese white makes for better opacity and gives the best coverage... shrug... Neutral tint is very cool. Two years ago, when I thought it was the same as Black, I wouldn't even have looked at it. But I've since tried it and now I have two brands of it! I look for watercolors based on two primary factors, their color AND their behavior. I was looking at the Schmincke color palette to see how (in terms of color) permanent carmine compares with Alizarin Crimson and Rose Madder (which in my book, are both absolute MUST HAVEs on any color palette)... but the web palette is useless for color. I wish they would actually paint the stuff on paper and take photos of it. I know it's not perfect, but at least it gives you a clue about it's behavior... Speaking of paint behavior, it is very important (particularly with watercolor) that the paint will do what you want texturally, stainwise, opacity, etc. For instance, it is much easier to make 'mud' with two opaque watercolors than with one that is opaque and another that is not. Or, staining colors work better for glazing than opaque colros... Here are 2 really good sites that I found on the topic. For getting started: http://www.fountainstudio.com/watercolor%20tips/tip-choosing_colors.html For color and paint junkies: http://www.handprint.com/HP/WCL/pigmt3.html#swatch The person who put this site together took a whole lot of time on it! Another part is whether the colors are warm or cool. For instance, it appears that you have a warm and cool yellow, warm and cool blue, and (sort of) a warm and cool red. This is good because another way to make mud is to combine warm colors with cool colors (see the book Blue and Yellow Don't Make Green, http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0967962870/qid=1031856371/sr=1-1 /ref=sr_1_1/103-8711054-4591840?v=glance&s=books). I don't usually worry about warm and cool greens, as I only use green for making a color more brown or grey, I never use it for green! Therefore, I pick my greens based on whether they will add pizazz to a color mix (like an herb in cooking :^ ) Some colors I would highly recommend, based on your already existing palette... - Burnt Sienna. I like it cause it tones down colors without making them dull. Also, it is a warm color, whereas sepia is cooler. Try mixing it wet into wet with Ultramarine blue.... really sensual! - Cobalt Blue - this is a GREAT all around handy to have color. It rarely muddies up the paint and makes for wonderful glazing effects. - - Gamboge - This is my FAVORITE mixing yellow. Its strong enough to stand up to the other colors (often a problem with yellows, Cadmium yellow excluded). Unlike Cadmium, it is transparent and not too staining. Another option for yellow is Indian yellow, which is definitely 'period'... but, and this is STRICTLY my personal feeling on the topic, not as interesting at mixing with other colors. It's very transparent. either (and these two colors react COMPLETELY differently) - - Rose Madder - Another GREAT mixing/glazing color. I'm saying it twice cause I like it so much. It is not staining. - ---- or Alizarin Crimson - very staining, beautiful mixing color. It makes beautiful autumn colors (Hmmm... wonder why I thought of that???) - ------------ Other favs. After the above next on my lots of fun list...---------- - - Cerulean Blue - a soft, warm and slightly grainy blue that makes beautiful sky and water effects. - - Naples yellow... I'm really mixed on this one. I was told at Pennsic that this is a great color for the scribal work. But that is typically more gouache related. In straight watercolor painting, it tends to be too opaque for my taste. As an alternative, I would be more inclined to mix my own with something like lemon yellow , sepia or burnt umber, and a very tiny bit of Cobalt blue. BTW, someone (I think it's W&N) offers a 'Naples Yellow Transparent', but I doubt its in pans. - ------------- well, ok... since we are on the subject of favorite paints .... Winsor and Newton's Perylene Maroon... yummy! Try mixing it with yellow... any yellow! Daniel Smith's Quinacronine Gold.... I love to play with mixing colors wet into wet. Invariably I reach for this one when I'm playing. Is it gold? Is it borwn? One things for sure.. .it's lively! =================================================================== To unsubscribe from this list, send email to with a blank Subject: line and unsubscribe scribes in the body of the message. I am also new to period scribal arts. Though not a professional, I have done calligraphy for friends, family and co-workers (wedding invites and such) and have, I believe, a fair hand. Painting in various media - oil, acrylic and watercolour - is also not an unknown. However, the last time I used gouache was for design classes in college (and I won't tell you how long ago that was!!!) As my old tubes of gouache could be classified as petrified fossils, I made a trip to the local craft shop to find only to find the Series A "primary" colors, red, blue and yellow labeled as such, by W&N. I would like to find their better quality paints, but haven't been able to locate the designer series either locally or on-line. Which leads to my questions: Where can W&N designer gouache be found on line? What are good quality alternatives (short of making my own)? What is the general opinion of Holbein designer gouache? Has it been used successfully for illuminating scrolls? Thank you ~ Ysolt __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Posted on the EK Scribe list this morning - Caitlin MacKenzie is looking for the contact who previously discussed maker's marks at the EK Scribe Party at War... 2. If a log is being kept of maker's marks, I've finally adopted one as of the latest scroll: A half-full hourglass in an annulet. Have a great weekend, everyone, and hope to see some of you at St. Elegius' Pentathlon (A&S) tomorrow. :) - --Lady Kayleigh McWhyte, "Mercenary Scribe" An Dubhaigheainn, East ('Beth Frank, Long Island NY) =================================================================== To unsubscribe from this list, send email to with a blank Subject: line and unsubscribe scribes in the body of the message. A couple of years ago I was asked to help write a rubric (set of criteria used to determine a score) for Illumination. Mistress Alicia Langland also helped in writing this rubric. The score is based on a maximum of 5 points in each of 6 categories ... aesthetics, authenticity, execution, creativity, complexity & documentation. Based on our own judging experience, we came up with definitions for each of the categories and a list of things that we would expect to see in a scrolls that cause us to assign it the points we do. A couple of months ago I was asked what judges look for. I remembered the rubric, but couldn't access it until recently. Now that I have it on my computer again, with Alicia's agreement, I have posted it as a link from the Cyber-scriptorium ... or as a more direct route, at: http://www.geocities.com/sca_scribe/rubric.html Remember, not all judges use the same criteria. It can vary from judge to judge and kingdom to kingdom.... this is our best attempt to put into words what we look for and how we score it. Even if you don't use it for judging, it makes a wonderful tool for self improvement in your illumination skill. It is especially useful when a piece doesn't look quite right, but you can't figure out why. Try judging a piece of your own work. Not only will you find things you can improve on, but you may gain a greater appreciation for what judges do. There is also a rubric for illumination... but I didn't work on that one, so I don't have a clue about what's in it.
