I've also seen people bring a desk lamp to better illuminate their project. Your kingdom might have criteria written up for what is expected at different levels of expertise. Check your kindom's Arts and Sciences page. I recently taught a class in my barony on research and documentation in general. The notes are posted here It's heavily weighted to my area - Barony of Three Rivers, Calontir - but you might find some of the links useful. Irene: A lot depends on the Kingdom and its requirements. In the Middle, competitions are usually only with the set criteria, not against another individual or their submission. We do have A&S Displays, where people put out their work and some sort of "this is how I got here" type of documentation. In the Middle, for competitions, we also stress that the individual start out with the documentation and then build the piece... in other words, do the research first and then the project. This applies for C&I work as well as any other aspect of A&S. Now, for your piece, I would highly recommend you keep your explanations as short and concise as you can, yet still explain the background of the submission. If you are worried about the change of your work being damaged, place it under plexiglass during display periods. Make sure the judges can look under that plexiglass, though, as they will probably want to see it a heck of a lot closer for techniques. You need to find out just how much space you will be allowed to have, and then plan your display around it. You may only have a 2' x 2' space, so you can't have loads and loads of examples spread out around it... or books. Place some good documentation in a binder... color copies of inspiration pieces or examples of similar illumination/calligraphy, etc. You are usually safe in putting the following information into your "documentation," no matter what kingdom: 1. How was the technique done in period. 1.a. How did you deviate from this technique and why. 2. What materials you used. (it is OK to use modern materials if you can explain why you didn't use the period one... i.e.; money considerations, availability, your own expertise, etc.) 2.a. What materials would have been used in period. 3. What problems did you encounter and how did you overcome them. The Middle Kingdom has a fairly structured format for documentation and judging of A&S projects. You can view our handbook by going to http://www.midrealm.org and then to the KMoAS link. I hope this helps you out a bit. Oh, yes. If you want someone other than a judge to comment on your work, then, by all means, place a note pad nearby with a heading... COMMENTS PLEASE. There have been times when I was just plain-out stumped about something and I could send out a query on this list, and BINGO! Someone's got the answer! Or sometimes I've needed help documenting something and someone's got just the source I need! It's been a great boon and help to me in my journey as a scribe. May your journey as a scribe be a fulfilling one as mine has! Oh, and as for a name.....well, what time period are you interested in? Country? Type of persona?
