Oh, golly, lots of places! Visconti Hours, Trés Riches Heures and King René Book of Love were birthday and Christmas gifts from family and friends. Rohan Master, Hunting Book of Gaston Phébus were purchased at Pennsic from Small Churl Books. Hours of Catherine of Cleves was purchased from a used/rare bookshop in Virginia. Master of Mary of Burgundy and Prayer Book of Michelino da Besozzo were purchased at Pennsic, from, I seem to remember, Mediaeval Miscellanea, when they used to sell such things. Grandes Heures de Jean, Duc de Berry was purchased from Castle Furnishings, a SCA merchant who goes to a lot of the same events I go to. They hail from Æthelmearc, which I live not far from. I'm on the eastern edge of the Midrealm. Göttingen Model Book was purchased from www.abebooks.com, my favourite used/rare book web site. Belles Heures de Jean, Duc de Berry was purchased at Pennsic, at a booth called the Haunted Bookshop. So I've gotten my facsimiles all over the place - in my travels to events, on-line and as gifts from friends and family who know my love of these things. It's kind of a catch-as-catch-can kind of thing. Sometimes you luck into them, sometimes you have to really hunt 'em down and be patient doing so. Not all of them are currently in print, some of them are imports, so you've got to do some serious hunting for those. SCA merchants can often be your best source for these kinds of things, because they know what we like and what we'll buy. Your standard Borders or Barnes and Noble wouldn't necessarily carry such specialised things because of the limited market for them, which is why SCA book merchants are often your best bet. They know we'll snap those things up in a heartbeat. Pennsic is by far the best place to really score great stuff! If there's any way in which I can assist you in tracking any of these down, please don't hesitate to ask me for help! I'd be glad to assist you! ~Saradwen Midrealm =================================================================== To unsubscribe from this list, send email to with a blank Subject: line and unsubscribe scribes in the body of the message. There have been several requests for a Scribal stream, so I am putting out a general call for instructors at this time. If you think you could come and teach something scribal, let me know. There will be loads of other things (including a heavy fighting stream), so feel free to bring SO's and friends (and I'll bet our Chancellor of Ithra, Master James d'Orleans would *love* to hear from anyone willing to teach anything, so please pass this along). A few people here have expressed specific interest in advanced techniques (they didn't say advanced *what* though...I'll check on that). So. November 9/10, 2002. Montengarde (Calgary, AB). It's an excellent book. It's by Ingo F. Walther and is published by Taschen. 2001 ISBN 3-8228-5852-8 It seems to have a page or two from every important book. The reproductions are well done with lots of details on material and provance. The images are broken down by century which is incredibly useful. BTW I've found several good books on eBay including the Gottingen Model book and the Macjowskie Bible (dba Old Testement Minuratures). Brandy, What an excellent idea! I looked at the Atlantian web site's source and, they do have a lot, but it tends to be oriented more toward technique than as a pictorial source. It would be nice to have a site that it organized by overall surveys versus specific timeframes or specific illuminated objects. To help you with this list, I found this great book when I went to London. It is a large hardbound book called "Codices illustres", by Ingo F. Walther, Taschen Books http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/3822858528/qid%3D1030379479/sr%3D11-1/r ef%3Dsr%5F11%5F1/103-8711054-4591840 The Taschen site has a better description of this book... Go to the site - http://www.taschen.com/ and type Codices illustres in the "search" box at the bottom. This book is gigantic! Every page has a color photo of at least one MSS example. In all, over 150 manuscripts are photographed and discussed. Best of all, it is CHEAP! $60 for a 500 page hardbound book with high quality color photos on every page!?!? My husband said he could use it for a bullet-proof vest (that is one problem with it... I can't read it without putting a pillow on my lap). . This is the first book that I purchased for Manuscript art. I like it as a general reference because it is chronologically arranged, gives a good overview of the art form, and has enough art of the various types and MSS to permit me to decide which styles I like enough to seek more detailed reference material. << I am trying to compile a list of sources for illumination from different time periods for the Tempore Atlantia competitions that will be held at various Kingdom events throughout the year. The time period rotates from event to event, and I want to have a list I can send people to check out for ideas for the competition for each time period. Speaking of which, if anyone knows any good sources for samples from the 1500 - 1600's for the current compeition, could you please post them? >> =================================================================== To unsubscribe from this list, send email to with a blank Subject: line and unsubscribe scribes in the body of the message. Some of the more obscure ones that I own that weren't on the original list posted are: The Bedford Hours A Book of Hours (illuminated by Simon Marmion) The Codex Nuttall (Incan manuscript) The Grimani Breviary Hours of Etienne Chevalier Hours of Jeanne d'Evreaux Hours of Simon de Varie Mira Calligraphiae Monumenta Sforza Hours Book of Durrow The Hastings Hours The Isabella Breviary Livre d'Heures (this is probably my most expensive facsimile, and the smallest - - it was a limited edition printing from the Vatican Library, slipcased in a suede covered box, the actual facsimile (produced actual size) is only about 2"x3" and about an inch thick, done in "squashed bug" style) Most of these I either bought in Britain, or at antiquarian book shows. Some are limited edition printings. Two of them are from the Getty. Thanks Despina! You're welcome for the Scribal party, Kayleigh, but it was Brigit who handed out the feathers for Quills. Thanks to her for that. Thanks also to all who attended the Known World Scribal Gathering at Pennsic. The number of attendees was higher this year than last and the work that was displayed - - - - - - words cannot describe the amount of talent and beauty displayed at the gathering. The love of the written and embellished word is obviously very large within those who were able to attend. I do plan to hold a Known World Scribal Gathering next year at Pennsic as well. Should Whomever sits the Dragon Thrones at that time be so kind as Their Ancestors, I would like to again hold it in the Middle Kingdom Royal encampment (it's in the middle of Pennsic, it's easy to find, etc.) Again, a tremendous thanks to all who attended the gathering and even more thanks to those who allowed us to view your works. The talent of the Known World grows more with each season and you all are the heart of that talent and progress - be proud of yourselves and your talents, as it is your right.
