Well, apart from not being on vellum. How's the restretching coming, or are you putting that off until after Pennsic? There's St John for writers, and St Luke for painters, and of course our "patron devil" Tytyvillus, but is there a saint specifically for scribes? I think I should probably introduce myself... Hi my name is Bridget and I love illumination , been in the SCA for 16 years and am now living in Drachenwald... I have to tell you all this because I am SOOOOO excited.. I met a man today who makes his own parchment the period way, this was in Germany at a medieval market. We spoke at great length as he was thrilled someone actually knew what that weird stretchy thing with some sort of skin was for, and he explained to me in great detail all about how he makes parchment "Pergament" from start to finish, he and his wife. He had all the tools ( which he made) and everything. I am beside myself.... We talked at great length about the scribal arts as well , he doesn't do that himself but is interested and said he did not think water colours would be very suitable for working with parchment. so my question is this... aside from the REAL thing, which I cannot do right now, pigments that is, what works with real parchment... he gave me a small strip ( bookmark size) of goat's skin parchment and I would love to try some things on it but I don't want to ruin the very first bit of the real thing I have. Now I am really excited... if anyone is interested here is his web page,... all in german I am afraid http://www.beckebrede.de/ and for those of you in Drachenwald, he will be in Osnerbruek some time in October as there is a large medieval thing... austellung er uhm.. display, I guess ,going on as part of city's celebration (800 years I think), where people who do things medieval will be showing how they do what they do and so on... I will look up the dates because I am definately going. sorry, I am so excited. I have to share this .... Bridget- who is totally bouncing around and needs to calm down just a little bit. - --- "Trust in God, but tie up your camel." --Indian proverb =================================================================== To unsubscribe from this list, send email to with a blank Subject: line and unsubscribe scribes in the body of the message. Too bad he's so far away. It's fine to use watercolor on parchment, just don't use the wash-type techniques. Mix the colors with only enough water to achieve the consistency of heavy cream, and never wet the whole surface. Look at medieval examples to see the sorts of effects you can achieve; note that none of them are the typical fuzzy washed-out image modern people think of as watercolor. Personally, I prefer gouache (opaque watercolor), but most of the same techniques apply. Have fun!
