Mistakes were still period, and Titivillus has means of getting into even the best artisan's work.... Be it in the form of a cat eating egg white and tracking paint across someone's page, or the "oops" of missing an entire line (been there, done that! *grin*) in the middle of 28 lines of script and/or something else that causes you to start over again. I've been a scribe in the SCA for 2 years - not as long as half of these other fine folk, but long enough to listen to their tales and learn a LOT from them. And from myself. Mistakes will happen, but Art is forever. :) Hope your friend enjoys the piece - if you have a scan of it, could you send it to the list? If you still have your "mistake" one, you could salvage it. In period, things like that often happened to scribes... many didn't read, but just new how to copy the letters; or someone interrupted their train of thought and they lost where they were in the copying process... so, instead of throwing away a valuable piece of vellum, they would do things like put the forgotten phrase or sentence at the bottom of the page (or at the side) and then draw a beastie or hand that pointed to the "lost" portion of script. If you drop a letter or word, you can simply write it in smaller under or over the spot where it belongs. That is easier with a letter, but a word can be tackled the same way as the phrase. Now, writing down a word twice was also common, and was often just left in. Or, sometimes, you will even see them crossed out in manuscripts. So, just for fun, you could try some of these tactics and keep the "mistake" piece as an example to show others how to "fix" those mistakes when you do a demo or something. Anyway, any time you complete a project is a good feeling. So, again, congratulations... even though you said it wasn't an SCA "scroll." I'm not the best at calligraphy, but try using a broader nib, or smaller letters. The spaces inside the letters should be the same width as the lines of the letters. (Did that make sense) Sometimes light vertical pencil lines will help you keep things straight. On the gold--put the gesso on very thick; get a bead of the gesso on the end of your brush, then gently touch it to the paper. Keep doing this, placing each bead right next to each other. Capillary action is used to make it all come together. It will be much smoother this way. You can also apply more than one layer, if the first is uneven or not thick enough. There's a really neat gilding size I've been getting people hooked on called Permacoll Mirror Gloss Gilding Size. It's made by Kolner in Germany, you might be able to find it. I can look up their phone number, if you'd like. It comes in yellow and clear, and gives really amazing results-- The best mirror finish I've ever seen with no burnishing. It takes a little getting used to, but once you get the hang of it it is truly miraculous. NIce work, keep practicing! If so, please come visit me at Good Friends Camp... I'll be more than happy to give you some pointers on your gilding. You probably need just a bit more honey or sugar-syrup in your gilding base, not to mention smoothing it out a little so you have fewer hills and valleys. If you can't make it to Pennsic, then I'll see what I can do for you at this distance. I like your use of drolleries... and I agree your calligraphy needs some work, but that only comes with practice, practice, and more practice. I'd find another ink to use that isn't so easily smeared. I like to use stick ink, but if that isn't what you want to try at this point, then try a more permanent one. Or, do your lining and calligraphy with thinned down black gouache that you have added just a good healthy drop of gum arabic to... makes a world of difference. Besides that, if you have paper that tends to bleed with ink, using gouache is sometimes the only recourse.
