The trick with the technical pens is to take them completely apart when cleaning them. That might sound rather daunting at first since getting the metal "nib" back into that teeny hole can be a problem, but I find I can do it by holding the base of the nib in one hand, and then lightly dropping the plastic case it goes into onto the fine wire tip there. If it doesn't go in immediately, I just keep doing that using very light pressure until the plastic case drops onto the wire by itself. Don't try to force it - you'll bend the wire. Due to my school schedule I had to step down as autocrat and the new autocrat has created the following event to be held on the same day instead: The Barony of Marinus presents A Collegium Fighters, Scholars, Craftsmen, Merchants, established and new members - you are all invited to the barony of Marinus on April 20, 2002, for a day of study and practise. We have a fine site with class rooms, a gathering Hall, fighting field, and archery area. All we need do is fill it... There will be a series of seminars on the Martial Arts being offered on the field. We will have instructors with different styles of fighting who would be willing to compare and share their skill with others. If you are interested in teaching or assisting, please contact Syr Otto von Schwartzkatz at marinus_marshal@yahoo.com or (757) 306-0479. MoLs who wish an opportunity to practise should contact Lady Felicia Morgan at marinus_mol@yahoo.com or (757) 588-8753. It is our hope to provide an avenue of practise and one-on-one teaching for the entire day in all forms of field activity. There will be an announcement later concerning the possibility of Marshallate or MoL classes. For archery information, please contact Lady Brandwyn Alston of the Rift at Brndalston@aol.com or (757) 488-3597. A full schedule of classes will be posted on a website linked from http://marinus.atlantia.sca.org/ and updated as the classes fill. Baron Ulliam will be bringing his portable forge for a day of blacksmithing, and classes on costume making (Japanese and Venetian), gold-work embroidery, tablet weaving, cooking, and basic how-tos for beginning SCAdians are already scheduled. More instructors are needed. There is a *small* (home-sized) kitchen available should an instructor wish to teach hands-on cooking. This event is 6 weeks before Atlantian University and would be an opportune venue for testing out a new class format or subject. If you wish to teach, please contact the Autocrat. Anyone willing to bring and set up their period pavilion in order to provide examples of travelling living spaces will be showered with the Autocrat's gratitude (and possibly chocolate). The gathering Hall will have a corner set aside for bulky craftsmen's equipment such as looms or foot-powered lathes, as well as smaller tools (like knitting needles, say. Or lucets). The premise is that if you bring such equipment, you would be willing to assist a beginner in learning your craft when you are working there. There will be a Watchman posted to ensure that your possessions are undisturbed while you are in class, shopping or on the field. Lighting is standard, not excessively bright or dim, and the floor is not carpeted. 8 foot tables and regular chairs are plentiful in the Hall. Merchants are welcome and can set up under the covered walkway which fronts the classrooms, or by the field after consultation with the Autocrat. There is no merchanting fee. Since this is a collegium, we are especially hoping for books, craft tools and supplies, more books, equipment to support fighters and archers... and did we mention books? Dining facilities are not convenient to the site, so a small Corner Inn will be set up in the Hall to provide consumables and beverages throughout the day. This is a fundraiser to help replace the barony's very tired and excessively small pavilion. Warning! The site is dry and the Baroness is rabid about a mug or goblet being used rather than drinking from an "original container"! Loaner mugs will be provided for those who have forgotten their own. One classroom will feature an overhead projector, transparencies and pens for tracing, and masking tape in order to give event attendees an opportunity to create banners and wall hangings. Bring your design, fabric, and such markers as you will need to outline your project. The site opens at 9am and closes at 6pm. There are no are children's activities planned at this time. Hotel arrangements will be posted via the Merry Rose as soon as possible. Event costs are: Adult - $5.00, Children under 12 - $2.50, babes in arms are our guests. I was shocked - both classes were completely full and I had extra people I allowed in for the beginning illumination class. I think both were well received, too. I did have some trouble with my slide projector during the white vine class - it wanted to melt my slides. Just the frames, not the film itself thank goodness. I've emailed Kodak to see if I can get the slides remounted, hopefully with paper mounts rather than plastic ones this time. I did discover one thing that's probably true just about anywhere anymore - it's cheaper to make CDs of the slides for color purposes than it is to try and get color copies made nowadays. I have a CD-RW in my computer here at work which I have no use for on my actual job so I've been using it to make personal CDs and backup copies. A CD-R (not rewritable) costs me about $6.00 for a pack of 10 at Office Depot for their store brand - that's less than $1.00 per CD. I had about 45 pictures for the slides so I also took them using my digital camera and scanner. It makes about 8M of jpegs, which hardly dents the memory capacity of a CD (these are 700MB) but at that price I don't mind wasting the memory space. Much cheaper than color copies. And it has the advantage that with a good resolution jpeg, someone can take it home and put it into their own computer and enlarge the pictures as they want, and get more detail than they could with the slides shown in class. Just an idea to keep in mind the next time you teach! Perhaps, instead of an off-list discussion, it could be held on-list? Greetings All!

Gulf Wars is next week.

Scribe's Point will be in the same building as last year (The Dungeon across from Troll), *however* the rooms have been divided up a little differently to keep the people working on projects off of the bouncy plywood floor.  Thank the Autocrat if you happen to see her, she is also a scribe and feels our pain. ;)

Bathrooms will be more easily available, you no longer have to go out one door and in another to get to them.

Scribe's point is open, by the schedule from 9AM to 5PM. It is lit, enclosed, and climate controlled. However the door cannot be locked, so valuable books and works in progress shouldn't be left lying about, or may be done so at your own risk. After-hours scribing and midnight-oil-burners should be arranged with me, THL Isabel the Mad.

Royal University Meridies (RUM) will not be at the war this year, so the shelves and shelves of books we had available before won't be there.

Scribe's point closes for the War at noon on saturday. After that time, work space is dedicated to scribes working on business for great court only.

If you have any questions about scribe's point or are dying to teach a last-minute class in the point, please contact me at ICKessler@Hotmail.com.

I encourage all scribes to at least drop by and see what is going on. There were Laurels and beginners alike working on projects or just playing with all sorts of scribal stuff. :) Isabel, will there be any classes planned? I'm doing an Acanthus Leaf class at A&S tent 3 on Thursday afternoon, but I'll be glad to do a run through earlier in the week at Scribe's Point. Just a plug for the A&S doings at GWs - there will be classes in three A&S tents going on at this year's War. Don't know much about the A&S competition, I do plan to check it out this year. Hope to see everyone there. Gulf Wars is loads of fun. I just hope I can get to see everything I want to see. :) Jennet - --part1_a2.21b65a93.29b61b86_boundary Content-Type: text/html; charset="US-ASCII" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Greetings All,
