There are several styles of borders available that span the range of skill and preference. We provide the materials and someone to field questions. All visitors to the scriptorium have to do is sit down & paint. It has sparked an increased interest in the scribal arts ... and as an added benefit, it has made people aware of how much effort goes into making even the simplest looking scrolls. The scriptorium helps the scribal community reach folks who want to do scrolls but don't know where to start or those who didn't realize they don't have to be both an illuminator and a calligrapher. The traveling scriptorium is under a year old but already several gentles who started out painting photocopied scrolls have moved on to being active scribes, producing scrolls on their own :-) Eibhlin ni Chaoimh Sylvan Signet of AEthelmearc =================================================================== To unsubscribe from this list, send email to with a blank Subject: line and unsubscribe scribes in the body of the message. Hello everybody, I'm Ld. Torin Ironbrow, former kingdom scribe of Artemisia. I've been on the list since shortly after it started, and read it more often than not, but I didn't post when I was in the office as I wasn't sure it would be a good thing or not. The promissory issue is a bit of a hot button for me. I didn't have that many active scribes (less than 10 for the kingdom) and most of them were working directly at the royalty's request. Checking around with how other kingdoms were working with the issue, I felt that using them for non-presedence bearing awards would be a good way of bringing in new scribes and keeping from burning out the current ones. The goal was to make them so they were the best quality we could manage. The biggest problem I found with photocopies was the toner/ink would come off if it got warm. So I found a print shop that could take scroll artwork and make a plate so we could use actual ink on a real press. For a run of 100 it would be about a $1 a copy, much cheaper than color photocopies, but at that price, I would need to supply the paper. This was a good thing too, because I was planning on using 140# hot press paper. This way we could use guache and real illumination (leafing) with new and experience scribes so that it would be a 'real high quality scroll'. However, I couldn't get the kingdom to approve the funds. I was told that 'The royalty would prefer that the scrolls come from the artisans of the kingdom'. I can only assume that I wasn't good enough in describing the concept. The worst part was seeing color photocopies of the preliminary pre-prints I had made up being used a year later....at a time that the color photocopies probably ran about $2/copy. Anyway, I think the idea is still a good one when done properly. But it seems that there is still the impression that pre-prints mean kindergarten crayon coloring book quality. Having gone into this surgery sort of clueless, I want to let people know what it is like if they ever have rotator cuff surgery. So here is a progress report.

Two weeks after surgury I am allowed to take my arm out of the sling and start using both hands for simple things, but no lifting of anything and my arm must be supported. Writing and typing are legal, but writing hurts and my arm tiers fast.

I am allowed at 3 weeks to start some simple rehab moves, but as of yet, I am still not supposed to move my shoulder.

At week 4 the Dr. wants to see me again

At week 6 I start rehab with the therapists.

That is how much I know now.

Arm is coming along reasonably well. the entry wounds are all but healed. Still no ability to rotate upper arm, hold any weight, or move the shoulder.

Thank you to all who sent me comments. I appreciated your words of advise and encouragement.

your servant,
mahee
