I think they call it "surfing under the influence" or SUI ;-) Don't feel bad, Siobhan. I just spent about $60 on Amazon last week buying Christopher Hamel's new book and finally buying Patricia Lovett's book. And I was completely sober at the time. And this last weekend I won't mention how much money I spent up in Napa after Western 12th Night (we decided to hit the wineries before coming home to Caid) - it's debatable whether those purchases were done sober or not, but I now have lots of good champagne to show for it. You can't take it with you so you might as well enjoy it while you're here. Ugh, I am coming down with a nasty cold right now (think I must've picked it up at either Kingdom 12th Night on Saturday or at a local 12th Night party on Sunday). I'm not on any meds yet, just lots of hot tea, herbal teas, stuff like that, but I am feeling pretty crummy right now. (Amazing, isn't it, how something as common as the garden variety cold can make you feel so utterly lousy?) Fortunately, I have no intention of going "e-shopping" anytime soon.....OK, well, I did book an airline ticket to Chicago yesterday on line. I'm going to Tree-Girt-Sea 12th Night in Chicago the weekend of the 19th of this month. Flying out next Friday night the 18th, coming back Sunday night the 20th. Fortunately, two other members of my Household somehow booked themselves on the same flight itinerary, so at least there will be folks I know on the flight! And it only cost about $100 round trip! At Midrealm 12th Night this past weekend, though, Master Thomas the Mailer, who is a merchant, had some WONDERFUL books that I seriously lusted after, big time. But money being a tad short, and this trip to Chicago already planned, I knew that I really couldn't go blowing a lot of money on books.....AND this teeny tiny apartment is already at critical mass.............I swear, one more book and this place is gonna blow up! My sister, the neat freak of the family, heard about this and had IKEA send me a catalogue. It arrived today. Mercy, I could go crazy with all of the bookshelf type of things they have in their catalogue! I've been looking around this tiny living room brainstorming on how I could finally maybe get my scribal books up off the floor! My mom gave me a bookcase for Christmas, but so far I have yet to figure out where it's going to go in here! I'd need to do some serious rearranging to make room for it. Where is my sister when I most need her expertise???? (Unfortunately, she resides permanently in Europe, near Munich, Germany.......I really need her help right about now - she is SO good at that sort of thing!) So all of you who, like me, are suffering with nasty colds, get well, DON'T e-shop (especially under the influence of cold meds!) and get lots of rest! Right now, I'm going to sign off and go take a nice, long, hot bath........................(sigh) ~Saradwen, who also has a miserably painful and sore lower back from a winter hike a week or so ago..................sheesh................................ Midrealm (boy, wouldn't I like to be someplace like Trimaris right about now!) =================================================================== To unsubscribe from this list, send email to with a blank Subject: line and unsubscribe scribes in the body of the message. I, and a couple friends, will be in Boston for an event a couple weekends from now, with some free time on our hands the late afternoon and evening after our arrival, and perhaps across the couple days following. Having only been to Boston once before, I'm not very familiar with the area (I've been to the Fogg Museum and some bookstores around Harvard Square). I'm hoping folks who are more familiar with the area than I am might be able to suggest some places of interest to SCAdians (collections at a museum, etc.). If anyone has any ideas for me, please let me know; I'd really appreciate it. It arrived today. Mercy, I could go crazy with all of the bookshelf type of things they have in their catalogue!<< Unfortunately the majority of them are what my ex-boyfriend used to call "pictures of wood" over particle board. That means they tend to bow if you put too many books on them (like a full shelf of heavy art and scribal books) and the length is longer than 2 feet. Nearly everyone in the SCA I know has what IKEA calls the "Billy" bookcase and they're nice and functional, but take my advice and get the 2 foot width rather than the 3 foot. I have several of the 3 footers and the shelves are severely bowed now - by about a half inch to an inch in the center. It's not hurting anything but it looks like hell. The 2 footers will still bend but not as badly. Better yet, spend a little extra money and buy bookcase made from plywood, from somewhere other than IKEA. I got some for my living room last year (oak veneer) and even the heaviest books aren't making these bend even a little.
