It has some nice links to other MS. sites that are worth checking out, such as: http://www.ulg.ac.be/libnet/enlumin/enl01.htm Manuscripts at the University of Liège in Belgium, just for starters. It's worth bookmarking and going back to! Enjoy! Oh, and BIG thanks to Judith from Trimaris for that absolutely FABULOUS Murthly Hours site. Greetings all, and merry merry.... :) Just wondered if anyone was planning on going to the Barony Beyond the Mountain's Yule event tomorrow -- myself and the crew of House Blackfletch will be attending, and I thought it would be great to meet some of the other scribes from the area (East Kingdom) there. (I'll be there with bells on... literally...). Also... The Proposed Canton of The Western Gate is in the planning phase of an event on April 4, 2002, in the general Huntington-Melville New York area (Long Island). I've been asked to teach a calligraphy class, and am willing to assist with basic questions of the like, but have emphasized as before that although I've been doing this for 16 years mundanely, each person will find their own level of comfort and expertise. I plan on guiding, not necessarily teaching -- I'd like to eventually throw together a book containing sample scraps of different papers, sample dots of paints, and the like. For display, pictures of the actual manuscript, and pictures of the modern hand of it for comparison and reference. The "class" would probably take place in the earlier hours of the event, if only because I don't want to be stuck at the calligraphy table 24/7 when I'd like to be able to assist on the archery field (as a marshal in training) at the same time (not literally, though the "pen is mightier than the sword..." *grin*). Insofar as the local classes go, so far it seems there's a good 4 people locally who are interested in learning calligraphy (I do illumination too), as well as at least one other further east, with the only thing remaining to be discussed being which day of the month to gather on. Same thing goes for the baronial A&S meetings, which are no longer being held at the Neighborhood House in Setauket (yes, I need to update my webpage). Most importantly, if the event in April does go through.... I'd love to arrange for a brief gathering before court or after dinner, for any scribe attending to bring samples of their work and swap "war stories". ;) It's not quite a scriptorium, but it would definitely give the beginners out here some inspiration! Just a little something to consider.... if everything goes as planned, and the event gets published, I'll holler on the list here. In the meantime, hope everyone has a safe weekend, and a wonderful holiday season. Thanks to everyone who provided the list of books.... I'll be adding them to my website soon, too. Cheers! ==-------> Lady Kayleigh McWhyte, Mercenary Scribe (East) E.Frank, Long Island NY PS: RE: The comment about not wanting to be stuck at the calligraphy table all day.... Don't get me wrong, I love C&I, but there's soooooo much more to do in the SCA, and I don't want to be pigeonholed into a category of solely a scribe. So much to learn (leatherwork, singing, more archery), so little time.... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The SCA Scribes Webring: http://nav.webring.yahoo.com/hub?ring=thescascribesweb ICQ uin#: 40730792 AOL: kmcwhyte =================================================================== To unsubscribe from this list, send email to with a blank Subject: line and unsubscribe scribes in the body of the message. My name is MR. VICTOR ABBAS, l got your contact details through a helpful assistant at the department of trade and lndustry. In 1997, the rebel of General Jonnas Savimbi commissioned my father as the head of the procurement unit for the purchase of arms/ammunition. my father was given the sum of THIRTY TWO MILLION United States Dollars (US$32 MILLION) for the purchase and shipment of arms into Angola from South Africa. The total sum was insured and eposited in the vault of a reputable self deposit/security bank in South Africa. The deposit was made easier for my father by a good friend of his who used to be a family frend when he was a special assistance to the ambassador of the republic of South Africa in my country (Angola). It was unfortunate, in the course of the negotiation for the arms deal my father died of a brief illness. He left a message for me and my sister about the deposit he made in my name, with an instruction for me to utilise this money wisely, as this was the only legacy he left for us. My Sister objected my father's will. Now with the consent of my sister, we finally want to transfer this money out South Africa. lam desperately in need of your assistance to move this money overseas for investment. 5% of this money will be mapped out to pay back any expenses that might be incured in the course of this transaction. Your benefit for your assistance to transfer this money into your private/company's acccount is 20%. Kindly note that this transaction is 100% risk free. I've seen other colors IN MANUSCRIPT ILLUMINATION for the wax. Straight up bees' wax will work if you color it with most any pigment that won't readily settle out of the fluid wax when you PAINT it into the recess, but adding enough pigment (the type with body rather than dye) to make the wax more plastic will make it easier to smooth after erasing or applying the initial wax coat. When you brush in the wax for the first time it may have holes, but you just smudge them down like you would after erasing. No big deal. The one caution is that if you add too much pigment body, the wax can become paste like when you try to smooth it. Just test it a little as you go by painting out a stroke and smudging it with the flat of your stylus. Otherwise, just put enough color to make it opaque. Caution: Do NOT use hard wax like paraffin! The paper can be nice thick bristol or cheap thin calligraphy paper. It doesn't matter. The trick is to have a piece of shirt card type cardboard underneath (or some other semi compressible but stiff surface. The give of the cardboard allows the paper to indent. It is a neat trick on SCA scrolls, and will look really good, but I have no clue whether it was done in period or not. Could the sleeveless tunic be a sideless surcote or a cyclas?
