I definately recall not being particularly impressed. If I recall the reason correctly, it has several pairs of Master of Mary of Burgundy-like borders (the semi-realistic flowers on solid ground), not as well done as MofB or as much variety, and about the same size pages, but lots more pages, most of them just text and red capitols." I am new to the SCA and am very interested in calligraphy and illumination. I am in the Kingdom of Meridies (spelling) and would be very grateful to anyone who could give me any information on becoming a scribe (ie: list of materials, cost, places to purchase...etc...). I would also like to know if anyone in my Kingdom is going to Gulf Wars March 11-17 (I think those are the dates). Thank you..... I am surprised more people didn't reply to you, but perhaps they have privately. The list of materials varies and depends on your finances as well as how involved you want to get at the moment. Several of us have web sites with some info on them. I have one, I think Eibhlin has one, and so forth. Also, depending upon the availability of art stores (more so than craft stores like Michaels) you will probably have to get your supplies through catalogs. I don't have the addresses handy at the moment, but perhaps I can put some of this stuff together for you by tomorrow or Thursday. I'm off to bed at the moment. Anyway, welcome to the Scribe's List, and I hope you will find it a warm and informative place. Hope your stay on the list is an enjoyable one. If my responses to the list become distant soon, it could be attributed to: 1. Trying to get a scroll done to FedEx out to Her Majesty for Friday, to be presented at Bridge Birthday on Saturday.... Next time, I'll have to remind myself to use less gold, find time for classes. 2. Trying to find a new job out of state... (Connecticut) 3. Getting things ready for the eventual move, etc. etc. On a side note.... The calligraphy classes I used to run out in Setauket as part of the A&S meetings on Long Island (An Dubhaigheainn) have had low attendance, probably due to the fact that they were so far west (1 hour travel for me to get there, one-way... Most people I know who are interested are from my locality). Last time I spoke to the new A&S Minister for my barony, we were looking into moving it in slightly west, into Smithtown, pending further discussion. There's also the possibility of a second meeting per month, out here in the Huntington area. All of this, however, is largely dependant on finding the time to go to local meetings, which doesn't seem to want to happen right now. Not sure how long of a break I can take between assignments considering I haven't been "off" for more than a month or two out here, but scribing is just going to have to take a back seat again when this scroll is done, to get my life re-organized. In either case, again, welcome to the list, and hope anyone in the area who is interested in the callig. meetings can contact me regarding availability dates, if Mondays are a problem. What is the best way to do this? I was told never to roll them. So that means mailing them flat. The largest scroll is 17" x 12". Do they make flat mailers that don't bend? Do they make them that large? Do I layer the scrolls with some kind of paper? There are about 5-6 scrolls. What else do I need to know? Here is what I do: Always check with whoever you are sending the scroll to. They may want it delivered to a work address or the address of a friend or relative who will be home to receive it. Once that is straightened out... Place plain paper around the scroll. Sandwich it between pieces of cardboard a bit larger than the scroll itself (I put an extra return address on the cardboard in case something happens to the outer information) Place a plastic bag around that and tape it closed. Then wrap the package in plain brown paper. I usually add an extra layer of packing or duct tape :-) the whole way around the edges. Clearly write the address and return address. Write "Artwork - do not bend" on both sides. Spend the extra $1 and buy the insurance. I like to let the person know the scroll has been mailed, when to expect it and ask them to let me know when they receive it. I let out a huge sigh of relief as soon as I know the scroll has arrived safely. So far there haven't been any problems. :-) Hope this helps Eibhlin ni Chaoimh AEthelmearc =================================================================== To unsubscribe from this list, send email to with a blank Subject: line and unsubscribe scribes in the body of the message.
