If you are interested in learning, a good book is 'Wheelock's Latin', by Frederick Wheelock, and Richard Lafleur, #ISBN: 0060956410 . It's resonably priced, I ordered mine from local bookstore. There is also a workbook available, highly recommended. I started this little project with the intent of being able to read some of those historical scrolls. But, have also found an interest in the common latin abbreviations oft found in said scrolls, and hope to start a listing of them, perhaps an article. I have a great little book that covers this, called "The Elements of Abbreviation in Medieval Latin Paleography." It's about four inches tall and about fifty pages long, and that's all it covers, with illustrations. You want -- taa daa -- PARCHMENTINE. This is an acid-free archival quality paper, perfect weight for scrolls (not too thick, not too thin), which both looks and behaves very much like real parchment. It is a beautiful light creamy colour, with the slightly uneven colouring and faint translucence of the real stuff. What's more, it erases like a dream with eraser or penknife, and takes both ink and paint beautifully without buckling. And it's cheap. The only bad thing, if you can call it that, I know of it is that it cannot be ironed flat -- it bobbles. I believe your nearest equivalent is Opaline ("spam") vellum. Where, oh where, you cry, can I get this magical stuff? Well, that's the problem - -- the answer is "Australia". However, I am perfectly happy to send over sheets of it for $3 US the A2 sheet (42 x 108cm, 16.5 x 42.5 inches), plus shipping. Of course, it'd be most efficent to send a large order which could be distributed once it arrived. I have a PayPal account, so paying me is nice and easy. I am also happy to send (free) to any scribe who sends me their postal address an envelope-sized sample so you can try how nice this stuff is before you commit to several sheets.
