I will be speaking to both him and Pete (seneschal) and any other involved parties at Thursday's business meeting regarding what to do with the scrolls. As before, I still believe Petris to be good-natured in suggesting the scrolls to me, however as much as I want to help with these assignments, I need a break. Mentally, I did balk, and I thought I had clarified my availability, despite interest in the non-SCAdian scrolls. The OTC's were a goof - they were OBT's, which I spoke to Duchess Katherine about; that too will be brought up at the meeting. While it was not my intent to make *too* much noise over the issue, I still stand clear on needing time for myself, and do not know Petris well enough to be able to discern whether or not he meant for myself in particular to do those assignments, or any local scribe who was available. Which is yet another reason why I contacted Katherine. It's entirely possible that someone else may be able to assist me. Either way, there are still the issues I wish to make clear.... Time, availability, and interest. Only one of the three is there (interest), and if I cannot do something right now, then I will do my best to either find someone else who can, or, as Petris suggested, it can wait. I make no guarantees of time if I take the scrolls.... but it is overwhelming to bring up 4 potential scrolls at the same time, without getting an idea of what a scribe's schedule is like at the same time. Plus it's too easy to get the idea that I'm being taken advantage of, when I am still recovering from a pair of scrolls with high amounts of effort put into them. It's a fault of mine; give me plenty of time, and I put tons of effort into it. Ask for it yesterday, and you get what I can afford. **Petris did not ask for it yesterday, which is great.** The question becomes, however, how long can this wait with the other things I already have planned out, on top of a 'scribal vacation' ? Hopefully these questions will be resolved at the meeting in-person on Thurs, without ruffling too many duck-feathers. All I know right now is that once again I am tired, and in need of an ale and some rest. - --Lady Kayleigh McWhyte, Mercenary Scribe (East) E.Frank, Long Island NY =================================================================== To unsubscribe from this list, send email to with a blank Subject: line and unsubscribe scribes in the body of the message. It is, > needless to say, completely RUINED. *sigh* Dear Cystennin, At least you can HAVE cats! There isn't a rental unit where I live that will allow pets of any sort, period, end of discussion. College town, ya know what I mean? The landlords and ladies here just don't want to deal with the even remote possibility of some college kid having a pet and then not being responsible enough to take care of it, so in this town, if you've gotta rent like me, pets are verboten, period. If only I could afford real estate........................a house of my own..............where I could have cats to my heart's content..................AND a washing machine and dryer so I don't have to spend those long agonising evenings in the local laundromat waiting, and waiting, and waiting, just to use a lousy washer and/or dryer when I could be home doing scrolls! Hrmph! I hate renting, except for the one advantage that when something breaks around here, the landlord has to fix it and I don't have to pay for it! And neither do I have to mow the lawn - BUT I do have to shovel snow in the winter months, but lately I've reminded the kids in the other apartments here in this house that I am old enough to be their mother, and I MEAN IT!! That usually gets the hint across that I'd rather THEY shovel!! Heck, they're half my age!! But to be able to have a nice soft kitty to purr and to keep me company when I get lonely in this cramped and tiny apartment...................(sigh) I'd even tolerate the occasional knocking over of things, like I once did when I was still living at home with my mom and our kitties that we had back then. She's still got an adorable kitty, a longhaired black male kitty who is spoiled rotten and actually lets me pet him now! (I think that's because last year when Ma was very ill and in the hospital for a good long while, I had to feed the little beast and I think he began to associate me with food, so he kinda likes me now and actually lets me pet him and even brush his soft fuzzy black fur! He used to be so aloof that he wouldn't even let me pet him and would jump off the sofa if I sat down next to him!) Maybe someday I'll be able to live someplace where I can have a kitty of my own....for now I just go over to my mom's when I really need a "kitty fix". So go easy on the kitties, Cystennin! It's their funny little way of showing you that they love you!! Honest! Just like those little "love gifts" my kitties used to leave on our front porch when they'd been out hunting!! ~Saradwen the cat deprived......................(sigh) Midrealm =================================================================== To unsubscribe from this list, send email to with a blank Subject: line and unsubscribe scribes in the body of the message. I think I solved this one by just letting people know that my house is open for scribes to come and work once or twice a week. Our problem with the local scribes guild was that it meets once a month in a non-child-friendly house, and sitters aren't always an option for my two. With get-togethers here, the kids are safe (as is everyone else's home;-) and I have a scheduled time to actually be working on stuff every week. I am really bad at working by myself; somehow it's just too easy to sit down and put your feet up once the kids are in bed instead of working on the scroll. Right now we've got some new calligraphers that are really fast track! I'm proud to say I helped drag Ragnar kicking and screaming into this new obsession, and he's doing wonderful work! And of the three scrolls that I accepted figuring I was probably going to do at least two of them for last week-end's event, I only got to do one! Hey! The sharing is as much fun as the scribing! It's about 8x8", a piece of wood upholstered with suede, Ultrasuede, leather or some such over about an inch thick padding and tacked/nailed/stapled in place. It's easy enough to make your own. Mine is homemade and the cover fabric is brushed denim. A gilder's knife is specifically for cutting the loose leaf gold when it's on the cushion. If you don't want to pay for one specially made, any straight-bladed knife long enough for the job will work, with the edge ground flat so it can't cut the cushion. It's pressed onto the gold and breaks it apart with a sort of slight wiggling motion. I like them and have about 20 different tubes or so right now. My only problem with them is that I tend to put them on the page too thick, but that's entirely my own fault (I've only been doing this since March). Here, in Canada, the tubes run about $5.45 or so each. The tubes that we can get in Canada have the health label on them, however there is no pigment or lightfastness information. I can't remember if there is a Lukas website with this information or not. (If your tubes have pigment info, would you be so kind as to share?) Hope this helps. Sometimes I use small locking forceps so I don't let go by accident. Keep the tips clean, avoiding touching them with your fingers, and clean them with acetone at the first sign of gold sticking. Alternatives to tweezer include a scratch knife or Xacto knife with a touch of spit, or a fingertip that's been rubbed on your nose first to pick up some skin oil. The finger is the way I was taught, but it's a major bother for me to keep the edges of the gold I've touched off the gessoed area. I find it wasteful. "Secreta: Three methods of appying gold leaf" is an excellent instruction book. The photographs show the handling of the gold in great detail. I can't remember the author, but John Neal or Paper & Ink Books should have it for around $15.00. Go to a good electronic supply store and buy yourself a pair of electronics repair tweezers. High tensile strength tungsten steel. DO NOT BUY the tweezers that you can get at the grocery store. I hate those. I can;t exactly say why. Maybe it is because I am a NASA certified micro-miniature repair technician and just have a preference for surgical steel instruments. I don't like the tweezers with the flat heads on them at all. They don't seem to grip the gold at all, unless you use ALOT of finger pressure, whereas needle tip tweezers like we use in Electronics allow you to use just enough pressure to get the job done without getting cramps in your fingers. But your mileage may vary. I fold a small piece of glassine paper in half and sandwich a piece of loose gold in the middle. I use a craft knife to cut it. The edges are nice and clean and I can get any size and shape piece of gold I want with little waste. If something comes up I can just close the glassine and put my burnisher on top and the gold stays safe and sound until I'm ready to get back to it.
