At first I was afraid to show my work but then I did, and everyone was oohing and aahing over each others work. It was great! There were tips, hints and suggestions shared that was much appreciated by all. Thank you again to the Ladies from Australia for the Vellumteen (I think thats what it was called) I can't wait to try it out. I'm from Atlantia and saw one other from my Kingdom and met many from all over the world. I really liked seeing how scrolls vary in styles, formats and even sometimes in wording from Kingdom to Kingdom. My favorite wording was for an AoA scroll done to theme of the Muppet Show! I would love to do something like that in our Kingdom. As I return to working on Our Kingdom's backlog, My scribal cats, Trisket and Akai and I wish you peaceful penmanship and beautiful brushstrokes, Lady Daniela Schwartzhaupt (PS. I did get an invite to the Aethelmearc scribe's gathering on Tuesday, though, and that was lovely. Christofano had invited me along. Got to see some lovely work by the Aethelmearc folks, and it just makes me wish even more that I could shed the mantle of this corporate office and get back to doing more scrolls. I'm going to try and get one started here shortly but since I'm still trying to get about 8 other things done for the exchequer's office I'll have to see how things play out. Ragnar, I think you're in very good hands over there, considering the numbers of AEthelmearcian scribes on the list here, and the wonder and beauty I have seen them produce (had I joined the SCA four years ago, I would have been part of that particular kingdom, but mundane life took me in a different direction). As for you, Lady Tzitzakon -- hi neighbor! *grin* Though my home barony is An Dubhaigheainn (Suffolk County, Long Island), on the other side of this pond, I spend more time in my adopted home in Dragonship Haven (by Bridgeport, CT), if not wandering about on the archery fields, then certainly in the company of some fine folk from DH and BBM. I hope your stay in the East will be a comfortable one, among many new friends. May the two of you produce many wonderful "doodles" and "scribbles". :) In Service, Lady Kayleigh McWhyte, Mercenary Scribe. My father kept it rolled up, with a rubber band around it, and stored it in the closet. He had assumed that a real leaf from a real medieval antiphonal would be worth a fortune, and that therefore the leaf he had was a printed reproduction-- but a reproduction wouldn't have pinholes and scratches in the vellum where the lines were ruled. It's not illuminated, or otherwise fancy enough to be worth reproducing, so I think it's real, if not terribly valuable to anyone but myself. To my semi-trained eye, it appears to be written in an Italian gothic hand-- Does anyone know of resources I might use to determine when and where it was made? More importantly, does anyone have suggestions on how to care for it? The black ink has partially flaked off on one side, and since it has been rolled up for at least 20 years, it will not stay unrolled. I would eventually like to frame it, but for now I would settle for being able to study it without holding it open. I'm also worried that the oils from my hands might damage it. Some of my books have advice on working with fresh vellum, but they don't have anything on preserving antiques. I'd be grateful for any advice, or references to books that might help me.
