If you have a good source, could you let me know. Now, before everyone says "Master Balderick!", let me just say that I already have his contact info. I'm looking to expand my base of vellum sources, because sometimes Rick is out of stock. Also, if people on this list sell vellum as SCA merchants, and are going to be at Pennsic, it'd be a big help to me if you'd drop me a line. I'm actually going to get to Pennsic for the first time in 6 years, and if people have vellum in stock at their SCA merchant booths at Pennsic, I'd be very interested in knowing where you'll be set up so I could look ever your stuff. I have one more question for the list: for those who have made their own vellum/parchment, I was wondering what your experiences might be with using deer and elk skins for making vellum/parchment? (That is to say that the same process was applied to the entire text created). Most of the "medieval bibles" that we see illustrations from were actually books of hours (devotionals with quotes) or books of the gospels alone (due to size mostly). For example, the Visconti hours contains the story of the Passion, as well as several Psalms, in addition to Hourly devotions, but does not contain any complete books from the Bible. However, when complete bibles were made, they were completely illuminated. Frequently the title page would contain a full graphic, and an oversized capital. Each opening chapter or verse was usually featured with an alternate color (normally red or gold) drop capital. Much of the text was fairly plain, even the gospels, but featured alternate color (normally red) capitals or words presumed to be "spake by God" (which would have included Jesus words in the New Testament in many cases, though certainly not all). Many good books on illumination will include a picture or two of "normal" pages to illustrate the spacing / coloring of pages predominated by text as well as those with more "traditional" graphical illumination. Many of these will feature small illumination scenes in the margins or what are often called marginalia which were added to correct mistakes (small figures dropping in an extra character or such). I recently got to see a sample of a text at the Huntington museum in Los Angeles and it is actually displayed open to Old Testament pages which feature illumination (a very nice capital and vine work. Unfortunately I don't have any suggestions for Corinthians directly. But I suspect that if you follow general guidelines for capitals and spacing seen in other books you should be okay. Can you clarify for me what you meant in your message? Am I mistaken about either the purpose of the original post, or the purpose of the list? She's working on cleaning up the interkingdom precedence bits in *her* db. I thought this would be a good list for it because scribes know more about awards and places than just about anybody. I asked for private responses and mostly got them. (We both got *lots* of mail - you guys are great!) I posted the original at lunch time (my time) - when I got home from work I posted another "thanks but enough already" kind of message and they still kept dribbling in. She's all caught up now and we've got one volunteer who will research whatever little bits are still missing. I agree with Damon - it's a close call but He's the boss :) this is the kind of thread that could go on for a very long time. Drea and I appreciate your help very much! I was only able to view the abstract. I may interlibrary loan it even though most of it will go over my head. (But then again that what the resident chemical engineer is for.) Cheers, Slaine http://www3.interscience.wiley.com/cgi-bin/abstract/27884/START A TXRF and Micro-Raman Spectrometric Reconstruction of Palettes for Distinguishing Between Scriptoria of Related Medieval Manuscripts Guido Van Hooydonk, Martine De Reu, Luc Moens, Joke Van Aelst, Ludo Milis European Journal of Inorganic Chemistry Volume: 1998, Issue: 5, Date: May 1998, Pages: 639-644 Abstract Assigning related medieval manuscripts to different workshops on the basis of codicological characteristics, is not straightforward. We present the first attempt to distinguish between scriptoria by means of a large-scale total reflection X-ray fluorescence (TXRF) analysis of pigment elements and an identification of pigment molecules with micro-Raman spectroscopy. We analyzed 324 colored items in 10 medieval manuscripts, of which 7 are folio-sized illuminated manuscripts, all ordered by Raphael de Mercatellis in the late 15th and early 16th century. Palettes in miniatures were not yet examined. Blue palettes are exclusively azurite-based and are easily differentiated by means of the respective amounts of Ti, Ba, and As. Differences for green palettes are also pronounced. The green Cu-based pigment was not yet identified, but it certainly is not malachite or verdigris. Red pigments used are HgS, vermilion, and Pb3O4, red lead. The Flemish gold-leaf technique is used. The 7 Mercatellis manuscripts show two different palettes, both different from the non-Mercatellis manuscripts. The grouping of the Mercatellis manuscripts according to date and to palettes is, in general, consistent with a grouping on the basis of a classical codicological analysis, although some conflicting results are obtained. A quantitative and qualitative reconstruction of palettes by means of TXRF- and Raman-spectra, provides with a complimentary and objective tool for distinguishing between scriptoria. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
