There was an old baroness,
Who lived in a shoe....

Well, it's not quite true, but close enough for our purposes. The Barony
of Marinus needs a pavilion to shade our people and to be a place of
hospitality and camaraderie. We also need to slake our thirst for knowledge,
which we do by lending aid to the printing of the Kingdom's A&S newsletter,
the Oak. So keeping these two desires in mind -

We bought a book. An old, old book.

How could buying a book, especially one printed in 1568, help us with our
quest for fulfilment? Easy - we're going to raffle the book away and split
the proceeds between our need for food (for the mind) and shelter. So we are
announcing the lottery of :

"Martyrologium", written approx. in the year 875 by Usuardus, a monk of St.
Germani de Pratis and purveyor of saintly artefacts for his King, Charles
the Bald; reprinted during the Great Religious Debate (in the year 1568) by
Johann Molanus, a theological professor at Louvain. The work was "the most
famous document of it's time" according to the Catholic Encyclopaedia and is
still a referenced authority on it's subject.
Our copy is documented in the Cockx-Indestege and the Adams listings, and
is in excellent condition, although it is now missing it's cover. The edges
of the pages are in red and none are missing or defaced. Although it is
written in Latin, the entries are well organised and this non-Latin reader
could puzzle out enough to find the entry for her patron saint and which
feast days occurred on her birthday. I also liked the scattering of pictures
in the text.

If you'd like a chance to own a book printed in 1568, or to gift it to a
loved one or academic institution with such a treasure of the past, here is
your opportunity. Chances will be sold at a dollar (US) each. The actual
lottery will take place at Pennsic. Tickets will be sold in advance,
starting now, by mail or in person, and will continue to be sold until the
actual drawing. Information about where they will be available during
Pennsic will be posted after landgrab. If you are not attending the event,
we can make delivery arrangements.

For more information, please contact Baroness Rosine of Rowanwald at
Rowanwald@sybercom.net., or by writing to Terri Morgan, 905 Spring Garden
Lane, Virginia Beach, VA 23452.

Please help us with this worthy cause. This book should go to someone who
will enjoy having a piece of our time period in their hand.

Nobility depends not on parentage or place of birth,

The *real* "liquid gold" as described in manuscript catalogues is actually shell gold -- essentially gold dust in glue (typically gum arabic, I would assume). It comes as a little button a bit smaller than a dime, about 1/8" high in the middle, in a tiny white plastic dish. (The original medieval stuff was mixed up in a seashell, hence the name.) It costs about $40 here (Australia), so I would suppose you can get a button for US $20-25 or so. Shell gold has two virtues and one drawback: it can be painted in very fine strokes, much finer than leaf can be laid on gesso or size (raised plaster-based and flat, respectively); it can be diluted to give a gold sparkle to other paint; but it cannot be burnished to anything like the mirror finish of leaf. In fact, it can only really be shined up a little if at all, with *very* careful hard burnishing or gentle polishing with silk. Any reputable gouache -- esp. Windsor & Newton -- will do a good job of being shell gold. The W&N lasts at least 20 years; don't know how much longer. However, any gold subsitute will tarnish eventually, in a timespan ranging from 6 months to 20+ years. I myself use Sakura "Tempera Powder Gold" when I don't use the real thing (I have gone through 2 1/2 real shell gold buttons in 10 years of low to moderate activity). On a good-quality paper background, it will retain its shine and colour quite well for at least 8 years when not exposed to much light; in higher light conditions, it tarnishes in 5 or so. It is *cheap* - -- a 25ml (2 1/2 oz, approx) bottle of powder for $5 or so. It is *way* *shiny* -- you absolutely cannot tell it from the real stuff when first laid down -- and like gouache, it rehydrates indefinitely. For obvious reasons I cannot tell you where to find it in the US or Canada, but I'm fairly sure I've seen it mentioned on this list before. - --Yseult de Lacy, OL (West, Lochac) - ----------------------------------------------------------------- Chris Robertson http://goldgryph.virtualave.net Yseult de Lacy,OL Wentworth Falls, Sydney Barony of Rowany NSW Australia Lochac (West Kingdom) =================================================================== To unsubscribe from this list, send email to with a blank Subject: line and unsubscribe scribes in the body of the message. In reading the monthly administrative email, I decided it was time to
follow its advice and introduce myself.  I'm brand new to the list and also
to scribe stuff in general.  I'm going for my first "lesson" with Baroness

Baroness Isobel Bedingfield this week.  I look forward to learning the
scribal arts and to posting to this list as my limited knowledge might be
helpful.  Glad to be working with you all.

I saw a thread earlier about a Scribal Event sometime this fall or winter in PA. I didn't see too many comments about it but to me it sounded wonderful!! I for one would love to take classes to improve my illumination. I would especially love to draw and paint faces on miniatures as that is one of my weak points. Id also like to brush up on my goldleafing too. A hands on class on that would be great!! Ive got the supplies to do it, but never had the nerve to try it yet. What does everyone else think? If you live in a nearby kingdom, or will happen to be in the Dallas/Ft Worth area on the weekend of July 14, feel free to join us! Please note that the scroll design class and the insignia class are based on the Ansteorran scroll and award process, which is markedly different from those of other kingdoms. I think most everything else should be applicable across kingdoms. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me or the autocrat, whose info is on the event webpage (url provided below). Warm regards, Sara Penrose Ansteorran Star Signet Here is the letter I posted to our Kingdom list: - --------------------------------------- Hi all! Please forgive me if you receive multiple posts - I just wanted to take a moment to remind everyone that the Ansteorran Heraldic and Scribal Symposium is coming up on July 14. SCRIBAL CLASSES I have the great honor of coordinating the scribal tracks for this event, and wanted to share with all of you some of the wonderful classes that are planned: * DESIGNING AWARD SCROLLS, taught by Mistress Stella Silvana. Helpful hints for designing award scrolls, both photocopied and original works. * MAKING KINGDOM AWARD INSIGNIA, taught by Mistress Stella Silvana. For those interested in the creation of award insignia. * WRITE YOUR NAME IN ARABIC, taught by Lord Mahee of Acre. An introduction to Arabic calligraphy. * ARABIC/ENGLISH ILLUSIONARY SCRIPT, taught by Lord Mahee of Acre. An Arabic script that reads as English but that uses actual Arabic letters. * MAKING YOUR MARK, taught by Lady Suzanne de la Ferte. Designing a mark to use as your signature. * HERALDIC ART OR COLORING WITHIN THE LINES - Lady Suzanne de la Ferte. How to draw at a consulting table. What "They" are looking for and what works well. * DRAFTING FOR SCRIBES - HL Muireann a Dun Na Traighe Ceine. Drafting techniques, tricks and tools to aid in scroll design and layout. * BASIC LETTER FORMS- Lady Lete Blithespring. A discussion of basic calligraphy skills from a long-time professional calligrapher. * ANALYZING MANUSCRIPT HANDS - Lady Lete Blithespring. Tips on how to look at, analyze, and reproduce a period hand from a long-time professional calligrapher. * BAR BORDERS AND IVY VINES- Mistress Hillary Rose Greenslade. Overview of historical illumination known as 'bar border and ivy vines,' with hands-on drawing/layout guidelines. * COLOR PALETTES OF MEDIEVAL AND RENAISSANCE ARTISTS - Mistress Serena Lascelles. Basic information on period pigments--which pigments are period and which are not, what binders were used, and other information. * GOLDLEAF AND GOLDLEAF TECHNIQUES - Master Geoff Cathan. An introduction to gold leafing tools and application techniques as applied to paper and vellum. This is an extraordinarily talented group of artisans; we are fortunate to have them come share their knowledge with us. OTHER SCRIBAL ACTIVITIES In addition to the classes above, we will also have some other fun scribal activities planned: ALL-DAY CHARTER PAINTING. We'll have a room set aside for charter painting throughout the day. Stay all day or stop by between classes to paint charters for the kingdom. Supplies provided. SCRIBAL TEST, sponsored by Mistress Rose Cathan. Come test your scribal knowledge! This will be similar to the test Mistress Rose sponsored at Knowne World Hearldic Symposium. The questions are pretty tough, so study up! There will be a prize. :) WHAT TO BRING Some instructors are requesting a small donation to help offset their cost of materials, so *please* bring a little money to cover that. Bring paper and pen to take notes in your classes. Also, feel free to bring your paints, brushes, calligraphy pens, and ink - you may get the chance to try them out in your classes or at the charter painting table. MORE INFO There's lots more going on at this event than what I've listed here. There are tons of great heraldic classes planned, too, and more. More details about the site and the event, including info about the heraldic tracks, can be found online at http://home.earthlink.net/~dmriney/AHSS/ I look forward to seeing everyone there!
