The things I wanted to say about lazurite color separation have to do with pH and the different kinds of pine rosin, and how medieval rosins and turpentines and gums are very different from modern ones, and how this effects lazurite separation using the Ceninni recipe. Basically, I think the Ceninni recipe should work if you are careful to use the right starting materials and are careful to maintian a neutral to basic pH. If I have a chance, I'm thinking of maybe setting up some experiements to see what the parameters are on the Ceninni recipe. Gettens and Stout (1942) and Plesters (1993) both indicate that modern attempts in the conservation science community to levigate lazurite using the "clothlette" method described in Ceninni and several other manuscripts should work if pH is maintained on the alkaline end of the universe. The difficulty, of course, is finding or making the right sorts of medieval pine rosins, since it's fairly obvious to me at this point, that modern rosins and turpentines aren't anything like their period equivalents. It's bad enough that I've now assembled a list of 5 to 6 pine tree species of the US northwest which might yield turpentines extremely close to the Venice and Strausburg turpentines of medieval europe. Mind you, I probably would never have gone down this piney path of pursuit if it weren't for the unending quest to make medieval pre-shellac sealing wax. Hmmm...the role of medieval rosins in making sealing wax and ultramarine - - it's really amazing sometimes how things tie together. Tell me if you're going to be at Pennsic, and who you might be camping with. ttfn, Therasia =================================================================== To unsubscribe from this list, send email to with a blank Subject: line and unsubscribe scribes in the body of the message. It's not really so new, but it is definitely nice. She's advertised the site in the Pikestaff (EK publication) at least once within the last 3 months or so, and has been part of my webring for a bit. I also wonder how Amaral went, for those who were there? K&Q Archery Championships went well; the new Queen's champion is Daniel Krakkenson, the youngest grandmaster in the East (looks like he's about 13-14 years old?). This kid managed to beat out all of the seasoned pros (his Dad's a great coach), and scrolls were actually done on site between the cloudbursts at the end of the day. (Nobody we knew stayed over on Sat night due to 2 storms reported to be on a collision course for directly overhead; flash flood warnings were issued, and nearly everyone booked it out of there after court). Also competing were a fair number of other well-known EK scribes, including the Tyger Signet herself, Duchess Katherine, and Lady Paigan Crawford marshalling, to name a few. Nearly everyone I met there seemed to enjoy it, despite the blazing sun in the morning, and the soaking downpours in the afternoon (possibly caused by that 'gatorade-like' water dump on the recipient of the Laurel.... the rain started SECONDS afterward). I'd love to hear how Amaral's scribal sessions went, for anyone who was there. What was intended to be an elated tale of whom I met as a scribe in the SCA at Kingdom Archery Championships has now turned into a blown-out case of how to properly address people by their titles. My oversight was not an intentional slight against any of the Royalty, Laurels, Barons / Baronesses, Maunches, Pelicans, etc. in the Knowne World. If I have offended you (or any others) for being not too exposed to being up close and personal with those 'of rank', in the brief three years that I have been part of the Society, then I apologize for that. I can't say I'm not disappointed, Master Johannes, and more than a little hurt in your own oversight in failing to see the forest for the trees. You have no idea what kind of stressful weeks I have undergone, (and that much I can understand, since you do not know me personally) but I saw no indication of your own apology for pointing out my oversight. I am not the sort who worries nonstop about impressing others with titles, but I do respect who they are, and marvel at what they have done. I hope you don't mind my forwarding this missive to Duchess Mistress Katherine and Mistress Crawford, as an apology of sorts, although in the entire time that I have spoken with the Signet herself, she has never bothered to correct me -- via e-mail or via spoken word. If she wishes to correct me in addressing her, then I leave that to her authority, thank you. Likewise, I practically idolize Mistress Paigan, though she and I have never met personally. Her work definitely deserved the Laurel which I was not at 12th Night to see presented, but by far, omitting her title was NEVER intended to be a slight. To all others who have had to read either this missive or Master Johannes, I apologize. Any future arguments will be conducted privately. Oh say it isn't so! That's the very last thing I want! Let us not go there at all. But unless you've been deluged with private messages, or my computer isn't handling the volume generated, you and I are the only discussants. It was intended as a very mild "let me point out" six months after the fact (and the main reason is that Paigan was my apprentice and I am justly proud of her elevation) which I hoped my prefatory remark had made clear. I guess it didn't. I hate throwing titles around, and I am very bad at judging when it seems needful. > My oversight was not an intentional slight against any of the Royalty, > Laurels, Barons / Baronesses, Maunches, Pelicans, etc. in the Knowne World. > If I have offended you (or any others) for being not too exposed to being up > close and personal with those 'of rank', in the brief three years that I have > been part of the Society, then I apologize for that. Well, you haven't offended me in the least, and I really don't believe you've offended anyone else. But I do seem to have added to your stresses with my message. Let me apologize to you, and ask you to keep in mind that e-mail is nowhere near as clear and easy to understand as person-to-person communication (difficult thought that is), and no one tries to offend. > I can't say I'm not disappointed, Master Johannes, and more than a little > hurt in your own oversight in failing to see the forest for the trees. I'm sorry you're disappointed, I have indeed no idea about your stressful weeks, I have found your previous postings unobjectionable, and I am confused by the rest of that sentence. I'm glad you don't worry about impressing others with titles. I think titles are the bane of the SCA, because they can mask both the reason deeds are done, and the humans who do them. > I hope you don't mind my forwarding this missive to Duchess Mistress > Katherine and Mistress Crawford, as an apology of sorts, although in the > entire time that I have spoken with the Signet herself, she has never > bothered to correct me -- via e-mail or via spoken word.
