A lot of scholars used Gerald's words about a book "painted by an angel" in describing the BoK. Furthermore, Kells isn't even in Kildare county. I was thinking of using either rabbit skin glue or wheat paste. The store is called Red Lead and it is in St. Louis MO. When I asked the lady what the paper was she said "Yep, looks like vellum" but there are a multitude of papers in the store that are called vellum. A 27" by 18" sheet cost $3.95. I could experiment further at that price. I have everything else I need to do these scrolls in a very period manner so I might ask around here to see if someone has a couple of sheets of vellum I could use. (whoo hooo One of the texts arrived as I was typing this.) Slaine __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Get email at your own domain with Yahoo! It is a rather small one, about 1" in diameter, with a simple trillium and laurel wreath on it. And there is plenty of wax in supply for it. :) So Gwen, if you would like the wax seal used on your forthcoming scroll, just send the Crown a note requesting same. Most Royalty seem to be unfamiliar with how to use a wax seal. Are there any special tips or tricks that folks here could share on how to use a wax seal? I have a few personal ones that I have used a couple of times, with some success, but it seems to be tricky stuff. thanks, Genevieve Ealdormere =================================================================== To unsubscribe from this list, send email to with a blank Subject: line and unsubscribe scribes in the body of the message. We have a dedicated wax ladle we use for our sealing wax - otherwise be prepared to go through a lot of kitchen utensils because the wax is quite sticky and won't come off the ladle. If you use the same one over and over again, that's not a problem. Cool the seal down before using it, and between uses if you're doing multiple seals at a time. When I used to help out Eowyn and Aliskye with seals, we would set the seal down in a bowl of ice between uses. You can use a little veggie oil on the seal if it has a tendency to stick to the wax (depends on how the design is cut - sharp cuts may not come out cleanly so oil might be good for those). It helps to have a cool surface to lay the scroll down on like a marble pasty board - it acts as a heat sink and cools the wax that much faster. Don't leave the seal on too long or it's harder to remove. Apart from having a stock of seals always ready, it also means that if you stuff one up, you don't have to worry about the pour soul receiving it. and you can practice your seal pressing :) For transferring the seal to the scroll, IIRC, you remove the seal from the wax paper, apply some drops of melted wax to the back of it and apply it to the scroll. They may be better ways of doing this. To me it sounds a little weak. /Jean-Paul - -- Jean-Paul Blaquière || Avatar of Computational japester@ucc.gu.uwa.edu.au || Thaumaturgy http://japester.ucc.asn.au || The only thing keeping me from being a serial killer is my distast for manual labour - dilbert =================================================================== To unsubscribe from this list, send email to with a blank Subject: line and unsubscribe scribes in the body of the message.
