I have a question: Sometime in the past few days or week or so, I seem to have read somewhere that only dry pigments mixed with egg yolk can be called tempera. What is it called when you mix dry pigment with glair? ~Saradwen Midrealm =================================================================== To unsubscribe from this list, send email to with a blank Subject: line and unsubscribe scribes in the body of the message. Saradwen, If somebody actually told you that, they were quite erroneous. It reminds me of when my ex and I were new in the SCA and some Laurel told her that stripes are not period. Oops! I should have warned people to not have a cup of coffee to their lips when they read that. Anyway, to explain it yet again, "Tempera" from the verb "to temper" means to change the nature of a substance by adding something to it. That something can be tempering with heat or cold, water used to make something flow, or glue to make something stick. Tempered paints technically then are all paints, but we call any paint that we temper by hand a "tempera" There is egg yolk tempera, egg white tempera, egg + oil as emulsion tempera, and even gum arabic tempera (which means hand-made watercolor). So to answer your question, when you temper dry pigment with glair, you have made "glair tempera", which some art history books mistakenly call "gouache", but gouache specifically is a gum arabic bound pigment with barium sulfate added to make it opaque. Anybody want to make "gouache tempera"? I think the only thing that would have made it better is to have had more money to spend!! After Wed the weather was good, not too much wind or anything. I have begun to merchant period pigments and dyes in small amounts and they went much faster than anticipated! But I really am trying to find the lady {I do beleive she was wearing a 'hat'} who zipped by in a cart on Friday night and bought a number of things; I forgot to give her the gum arabic that goes with the paint kit she bought and I have no idea who she was or which kingdom she was from. So if that was you, please contact me off list so I can send it to you!! And if you didn't get by and pick up a card at the war, and are interested, email me for details.
