Take classes, go to guild meetings and ask other scribes if you can try their materials. There are so many options.... and we all have our personal preferences. I recently bought 2 scribal beginner kits. For Christmas I bought my 13 year old daughter a scribal kit of her own and I bought supplies for AEthelmearc's Paint-a-Blank Scriptorium project last weekend. I didn't want to spend a ton of money, but I didn't want to waste money on things that weren't good quality. I set the bar at ....Things that I would use myself. Here are some of the really good buys I found. Reeve's gouache -12 tubes $6.99 at Michael's - Don't let the price throw you. The colors are great (the ultramarine is closer to the color of real lapis ultramarine than Windsor Newton). The binder is fine, but I gave my daughter a bottle of glair to play with too. It's hard to tell the difference between these paints and my Windsor Newton gouaches once glair has been added. For those in the Pittsburgh area, Prizm Art Supply on McKnight Road has a good selection of supplies at excellent prices. Windsor Newton 140# HP paper for $1.99 a full sheet. Six well palettes for 27 cents Factory seconds of name brand brushes for $2. Some of them have wiggly ferrules or a slightly bent tip, others seem perfectly fine. I even picked up Windsor Newton Ultramarine gouache there for myself at $4.79 a tube .. it was to good to pass up. :-) If you stop in, make sure to check out the selection of free informational pamphlets near the checkout. It's easy to go out and spend a lot of money on scribal supplies. Don't skimp on quality, but look for sales and bargains. I spent less to get my daughter's full kit than I did to get a starter set of Windsor Newton Gouaches for myself 7 years ago. <> Eibhlin ni Chaoimh AEthelmearc =================================================================== To unsubscribe from this list, send email to with a blank Subject: line and unsubscribe scribes in the body of the message. I've noticed recently some new folks have signed on, asking about getting started. I'd like to take this opportunity to mention a kit I put together for beginning illuminators. The kit is $25(US) plus shipping, and includes: - -covered, round plastic palette filled with 10 colors of gouache (I'll list them if anyone is interested--I'd have to go check.) - -size 0 round watercolor brush - -12" plastic ruler (with inking edge) - -pencil, white eraser, fine point black marker (Zig Millenium) - -50 drafting dots (tape for keeping paper secured) - -3 sheets 9x12 bristol board - -3 sheets tracing paper - -piece of graphite transfer paper - -several clean mussel shells for mixing paint - -Booklet I wrote detailing how to do 3 different styles of border: bar and ivy, Italian white vine, and "Book of Hours"(acanthus-leafy) The book includes color picures of each style when finished, step by step directions, and a set of finished, but unpainted borders that were photocopied onto cardstock, for those who want to jump right in painting, or to re-photocopy for practice, or for kids to color. The booklet is also available separately for $10. Shipping for the entire kit is $3.20 (US) for Priority Mail in the US. Regular mail is only a few cents cheaper. For the booklet alone is also $3.20 for Priority, or if you'd prefer, check out usps.com for cheaper rates. It is a 10x13" package that weighs 10 oz. (just for the booklet) It will be mailed from Milton, NH (03851) If you are outside the US, the shipping rates will vary, but you can use the website to figure it out from where you are. The kit would be a package roughly 12"x16"x2", and weighs about two pounds (maybe less). I take checks, money orders, and MC/Visa (but I can't guarantee security if you email your number) I have a bunch of these available, if anyone is interested, or if there are any questions, please let me know! Chiara da Ravenna Stonemarche, East (NH) P.S. If you already have the booklet, I encourage feedback--anything from typos to suggestions on how to make it better. I am hoping to do a larger print run soon, and I'd like to make sure all the bugs are worked out. =================================================================== To unsubscribe from this list, send email to with a blank Subject: line and unsubscribe scribes in the body of the message. This is a new system sent to me by the kingdom of the west. Hopefully, eventually this will make scroll and scribe and recipient tracking much easier. But first there's a lot of info that has to be added. Could each of you please send me your current addresses, phone number, email, whether you're active or inactive as a scribe, and which scrolls you have at the moment. And if you would like a new assignment, I can comply. Thank you for your help. Companion Celdae the Seeker Sable Sable Kingdom Scribe - -- What's a naiad? It's a wet dryad. - --T.
