Mistriss Chiarra shamelessly promoted her kit, saying: > I've noticed recently some new folks have signed on, asking > about getting started. I'd like to take this opportunity to mention > a kit I put together for beginning illuminators. The kit is $25(US) > plus shipping, and includes.... I can attest to its value. Obviously the kit is a great value for beginners, but the little booklet is worthwhile for most anyone, beginner or more advanced scribe. I picked one up from her at Market Day at Birka last winter, and recently finished doing an Italian white vine style scroll based on her instructions, which worked out really well, and made the whole process a lot easier by breaking down a fairly complex looking final product into some pretty basic steps (a copy of the finished product is posted at my web site at http://user.fundy.net/gaigneur/ under Calligraphy and Illumination/Gallery of SCA Scrolls). If you're looking for a way to jump quickly into some fairly versatile, beautiful end results, this is a great way to do it! I am a new scribe from the East Kingdom and have been asked to do my first scroll. Well it is actually an illuminated menu to be displayed at a twelfth night celebration within my Shire. They are placing this event in Northumbria during 1080 AD. Their original request was for Carolingia Uncial hand for the calligraphy. I am not sure if this is indeed the proper hand for this time period. Can anyone help me in determining the proper hand for this time period and area? Thank you, Dianaim =================================================================== To unsubscribe from this list, send email to with a blank Subject: line and unsubscribe scribes in the body of the message.
