We were commissioned to do Mistress Breanna Je Nell Aislynn of Blue Shadows' Laurling scroll. She mentioned to us that she is especially interested in Flemish work and noted the Hours of Mary of Burgundy. Thomas owned a copy, so do I, now. We chose to divide our scroll in half and do one side with guild in Trompe de ---what ever I can not spell it or pronounce it, style. This side also has her arms, supporters etc on it. The other side we did with all the interesting ink work shown and her fur children. This side also had most of the text and the seals. Well Thomas had some gum arabic he had mixed us about a year ago so decided to use it. Some of the powder had settled to the bottom. Thomas nuked it for about 10 sec and it became bubbly. I remembered they used ear wax. His lovely wife donated that ingredient and we were off and painting. O man this stuff stinks! The next day we started guiding. Thomas was so nervous he we getting hyper. I took my rolled up dollar bill a blew on the size then laid down the gold. It did not stick. Thomas then remembered we also needed some silk. So we then raided his wife's fabric stash and we were again off to guild, it still did not stick. I suggested tossing the rolled up bill and just huffing on it. Yes we has success! His 9 year old step daughter rescued the dollar bill. Flush in our success we decided to guild Mistress Katerin de Steal's Lauraling scroll. Thomas has laid down the Gum Arabic some time earlier. We huffed, and we puffed and the gold would not stick. Then Thomas pointed out it had been a year or more since he sized it. So we, resized, huffed and it worked. Breanna's scroll is done and presented, Katheryn's is still being painted. We had fun and a successful adventure. My name is Chiara and I am new to illumination/calligraphy. I do paint mundanely so have some (albeit limited) skill in that area. I also love to write poetry however have not ventured to attempt anything period as of yet. I would love to try my hand at illumination but have absolutely no idea of where to start. I have brushes but am not sure what kind of paints. I do have acrylics as they are what I use mundanely. I don't have too much cash flow so dont want to spend a fortune on supplies if I dont have to, especially as I "want to try before I buy" where possible. Any suggestions would be most gratefully received: Your Humble Servant Chiara beguy urdina Incipient shire of Camor _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. I was at an event today and bought a copy of a most wonderful book that I must share with you all. It is called "The Historical Source Book for Scribes" by Michelle P. Brown and Patricia Lovett (ISBN 0-8020-4720-3), published by the University of Toronto Press, $29.95. Dr. Brown is Curator of Illuminated Manuscripts at the British Library, and Patricia Lovett is a professional scribe. This book shows historical scripts and breaks them down pen stroke by pen stroke so that you can see how they were done, and is lavishly illustrated with period exemplars as well. It also includes a valuable section on tools and materials and discusses both period and modern tools. Each script section includes a box that explains letter height, nib angle, letter "O" form, slant, stroke sequence, speed and serifs, as well as a discussion analysing the script. The hands that are explored in this book are Capital scripts, Uncial, Half Uncial, Caroline Miniscule, English Caroline Miniscule, Gothic Book Script, Batarde, Italian Rotunda and Humanistic Scripts. There is also a very good section in the back of the book on Further Reading and Further Information that is worth knowing. All in all, this book belongs in your library if you are a scribe, and the price is quite reasonable, too! Saradwen who probably spent too much money today on books......so what else is new???
