A couple of days ago Saradwen asked the following: >>Does anybody else besides me have a lot of these same feelings, thoughts and experiences when doing scrolls?<< Definitely, at least in my case. I find I really have to be in the mood to do scrolls in order to do them well. Otherwise I spend a lot of time doing somthing that I'll probably wind up hating. I have 3 partially finished scrolls in my scroll case that I gave up on simply because after working on them for weeks, I still wasn't satisfied with them and finally gave it up and started over again. One of them was a countal scroll for Avery of Kempsford, who has a Roman persona and wanted Celtic work on the scroll, but his arms just *scream* Renaissance. The knotwork came out lovely but the rest of the scroll sucked - I finally gave up trying to combine celtic anything with his arms, as it looked so out of place, and did a late Renaissance scroll instead. The only instance I can think of where I gave up trying to please the recipient (he liked the new scroll just fine). One of the others was a wedding scroll - the drawings worked out fine as did the gilding, but once I started painting it was a disaster. My husband (who doesn't do SCA and normally can't tell illumination from a hole in the ground) called it the "Easter Egg" scroll because of how the color scheme came out. I actually nearly finished this scroll, but since I was being paid for it and I hated it so much I promptly started a new one with a better color scheme. The last one was a court barness for our soon-to-be Queen, Ciarlasse (she get crowned tomorrow) - I'd started it as "monumental Italian" with the pediments and such. The drawing came out okay, but I couldn't bring myself to start painting it except minimally. I gave up and did a new one in white vine. I keep these unfinished projects around to use as bad examples in classes I teach, and to occasionally beat myself over the head with ;-) Tetchubah of Greenlake, Caid =================================================================== To unsubscribe from this list, send email to with a blank Subject: line and unsubscribe scribes in the body of the message.
