The first SCA event I've been to in aprox 3 years. I took a classes in leather carving, turkish book binding and last in period penmanship. I found that (among other things) the hand I wish to use on my first real scroll is Carolingian. (Thank you Luighseach.) However, my local library has NO books with this hand in it. There are no dought books I could order in from another branch. For now I would like to know the x-height and angle so I can start practice forms at least untill I can find an example. Thanks in advance Federico Arciere dal Fiore Kirk Wendel Carreg Wen, Caid Lompoc, CA. _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. "Writing & Illuminating & Lettering" by Edward Johnston has a few pages on Carolingian Miniscule (which he calls "Caroline script") that might prove helpful. Also, there is a book called "Carolingian Painting" by Florentine Mutherich and Joachim Gaehde, which is a part of a really nice set of inexpensive books about illuminated manuscripts that Braziller has published. Although it has no instructions as to how to do Carolingian Miniscule, just to see exemplars from the time period should give you an idea of how a proper piece from that time period should look. Hope those help! Good luck, and keep us posted!
