Back in the ancient mists of time, when some of us were still new, we scribes laboured in anonymity, silently providing scrolls for courts and seldom did most folks know us for what we did aside from our inky and paint stained fingers. Our names were never mentioned in courts as having provided scrolls and once in a great while, if someone recognised your work, you actually got thanked by the recipient (although I've always made a policy of signing my work!). Nowadays, of course, things are far different. Here in the Midrealm, scribes who provided scrolls for a court are called up to Their Majesties and given a lovely scribal favour to wear on their belts, that all may know that they contributed to the magic of the court atmosphere. It's really quite special and I wear mine with great pride on my belt. And when awards are given in court, the scroll's artist is also mentioned: "Scroll done by ____________", so that all may know, when the scroll is shown to the populace, who did it, as the audience murmurs Ooooooohs and Aaaaaaaaaaaaaahs! It's such a gratifying feeling to feel appreciated for the long hours that we put in to our craft to contribute to the magic! And it serves, to me, as a continuing motivation to improve my craft! Does it get any better than that? That, dear Lords, Ladies, Masters and Mistresses on this list, is why I still do this, for the love of my craft and to make something really pretty that people will enjoy looking at and to be able to share my love of Manuscripts with others around me. That is the gift of being a scribe - or any kind of artisan, for that matter! Wow, is it ever jam packed with great information!! Did you know, for example, that "paint-by-numbers", so to speak, is period? As well, did you know that even when most MSS. were being done in monasteries that there were itinerant professional illuminators that the monasteries "outsourced" to assist in MS. production? Did you know that most decoration in monastic illuminated books served mostly as reading guides to assist the reader in knowing where he was? Did you know that the word "miniature" came from the word "minium", the red pigment that was used to rubricate large initials in early MSS.? If you own this book and haven't read it yet, you owe it to yourself to do so. Really a fascinating read! I'm just enjoying the heck out of it and am glad that I spent the $50 that I did to acquire the hardback copy! It'll make a very valuable reference book for my library, in addition to the first edition copy of this book that I also own! Saradwen, who is beginning to think she ought to read a lot more of her scribal books! =================================================================== To unsubscribe from this list, send email to with a blank Subject: line and unsubscribe scribes in the body of the message. I am ~very~ interested in learning more, and I have begun spending my spare time researching what I can find on the web. Can anyone tell me about how they got started? I live in between two shires (just outside of Nashville), and I only have transportation on the weekends. Neither shire seems to offer gatherings for learning A&S on the weekends. I have only been to one event, and had a wonderful time. I have enjoyed creating art ever since I was a child, and became quite good at it, earning a scholarship to an art school. After two years, I had to move away, and lost interest in spitting out boring art for advertising. When I saw some of the work being done by the scribes, I knew I would just love doing scrolls. Where is the best place to start? Should I study on my own and make some sort of portfolio, or try to find scribes in my area? It seems that they only gather on Thursday nights, which is impossible for me. Help?
