I was wondering if you all might be willing to share the list of books/references you have, with any commentary your favorite books and why? Well, I'm certainly not going to list my entire library here, because that could get lengthy. Rather, I will list what I feel are good essentials to own. Many of the ones I would list you already have, so you already have a leg up on having a good library going. I have, just to name a few: "Painted Prayers" and "Time Sanctified : The Book of Hours in Medieval Art and Life" by Roger S. Wieck "A History of Illuminated Manuscripts" by Christopher de Hamel, first AND second editions! "Scribes and Illuminators" by Christopher de Hamel "The Illuminated Page" by Janet Backhouse "Western European Illuminated Manuscripts of the 8th to the 16th Centuries" by Tamara Voronova and Andrei Sterligov (MSS. in the National Library of Russia in St. Petersburg) "Masterpieces of the J. Paul Getty Museum : Illuminated Manuscripts" "Medieval Illuminators and their Methods of Work" by J.G.G. Alexander "Treasures from Italy's Great Libraries" ed. by Lorenzo Crinelli Facsimile books: Rohan Master Prayer Book of Michelino da Besozzo King René's Book of Love Visconti Hours Trés Riches Heures de Jean, Duc de Berry Grandes Heures de Jean, Duc de Berry Paradiso Master of Mary of Burgundy Medieval Hunting Scenes (scenes from the Hunting Book of Gaston Phoebus) Illuminated Naples Bible Göttingen Model Book plus a bunch of those inexpensive little softback Braziller ones with the golden covers: Celtic and Anglo-Saxon Painting Golden Age of English Manuscript Painting 1200-1500 Manuscript Painting at the Court of France Golden Age Decorated Letter Late Antique and Early Christian Book Illumination - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- I also have "Writing & Illuminating & Lettering" by Edward Johnston, "The Calligrapher's Handbook" ed. by Heather Child, "Il Libro dell'Arte (The Craftsman's Handbook)" by Cennino Cennini, "De Diversis Artibus (On Divers Arts)" by Theophilus and "The Materials and Techniques of Medieval Painting" by Daniel V. Thompson, as well as "Understanding Illuminated Manuscripts : A Guide to Technical Terms" by Michelle P. Brown. I think if anyone was interested in starting a good basic library of books on calligraphy and illumination, I would start them out with de Hamel and Backhouse for exemplars, and Thompson and Child for materials and techniques. Those four alone would give you a really good working start to begin developing a solid understanding of the scribal arts. Göttingen is wonderful in that it is a period scribal manual, but nigh unto impossible to acquire. Took me darn near forever to get a hold of a copy, and once I got it, I read it cover to cover. Great for learning how it was done in period, as it mentions period pigments and methods and whatnot. If you can get a copy, more power to you, but good luck trying to find one! What do the rest of you have? I *know* you have an enviable library, Meisterin Katarina!! Please share with us some of *your* favourites! (She showed me a book last weekend at Crown that has me simply drooling in envy! It's a facsimile book of the ENTIRE Manesse Codex!!! OOoooohhhh!) And the rest of you as well, please share with us what's in your scribal library! Hey, for someone living in as tiny a place as this teensy apartment, I guess I'm not doing too bad. Oh, for a nice house where I can have one whole room to put just a library..............(sigh) If only I could afford such a thing as that............................ Oooooh, lucky you! I paid nearly $100 for mine! But worth every dime, let me tell you! It feels so good to finally have that book in my library! That is one that is NOT leaving this house, no matter what! Too hard come by to lose it to someone borrowing it and forgetting to return it! Good on you that you found a copy so relatively inexpensively! I think that is one book that once owned, few are willing to give up, so that is one reason that I think that one is so particularly difficult to come by, because all of us scribes want copies and those who have them won't part with them! Congrats on acquisition of a copy! For the rest of you, keep checking back to abebooks.com from time to time. You must be patient, but a few times a year, copies of that book *do* actually appear on that rare/used book site. Pays to bookmark it as well as put Göttingen on your "want" list with them.
