Don't know if that's so, but it does make sense. Happy hunting! I have a reason to try Gold ink for calligraphy... (stuff for Twelfth Night - wow, I'm thinking ahead!) I seem to recall that W&N has a gold ink, or that I could try thinning gold gouache to the right consistency. Any recommendations? The most important thing is that you not use fountain pen inks in a dip pen. They're simpy too thin and lack viscosity, so they fall out instead of flowing with good control. Dye-based inks such as fountain pen inks are also more prone to feather, even on good papers, because the colour particles are too small to sit on the surface. When I use bottled inks, I usually use Yasutomo Sumi (rectangular black bottle, very cheap in large sizes) or Boko Undo (Penelak). These are what I use for mundane certificate jobs (I fill in 8,000+ every year). They're semi-waterproof. For practice, I use walnut ink - not the real thing made from walnuts, but the stuff made of peat moss sold at Paper & Ink Books. Buying it dry is very economical. For fine art work I use gouache, Japanese stick ink, watercolour, occasionally airbrush acrylics (these are not SCA scrolls!) or dry pigments. Pigments can be mixed with gum arabic, glair or egg yolk as needed. I like Sumi (in the green bottle) but it will eat your nibs alive. I usually wind up cleaning the nib (with windex) halfway through the scroll and immediately after. Halfway through because the nib gets coated so badly that it doesn't work well. However, I figure if I'm using a dip pen I might as well use waterproof ink since dip pens are much easier to clean. Non-waterproof inks wipe off and clean up easy. Less rust and no extra solvents to fool with. The clincher: Non waterproof ink made of lampblack in gum arabic was a common medieval ink. It comes in a square green bottle, otherwise looks the same, works the same, is more prone to gum up the pen if not rinsed frequently.
