According to Carter in his "Crafting Materials" (1938, UK, out of print), these are the type best used for dyeing clothing, so presumbably they are best for making inks as well. I regret I don't know the name of the other kind of walnuts, except that the brand name Diamond - isn't them. English Walnut tree's grew along the streets near Glassel Park in the City of Orange, CA in the 1970's when I used to run down there while going to college. I assume those tree's are still there, and if the local owners of the houses there are as irate as the ones I knew in the 70's, I suspect that they would probably be happy to get rid of as many as they can come "harvest" time. As I recall they stained the sidewalks, front yards, yard furniture, and even the streets dark brown.
