Welcome to the Scribe's List, Eivarr. Wow, you are far away from most of us... although we do have people on the list from Australia. Since you don't have a lot of people nearby to help you out, and your library seems to be "lacking," I suggest you start checking on-line for books and information. Have you tried looking for Medieval manuscripts on-line?? There are some great examples there, and many of which you could either download portions of or print out pages. The best way I know to try to teach yourself how to do calligraphy is with lots of patience and practice. Print out pages of text from some of the manuscripts (in the hand you desire to do) and then Xerox them very light (so they look faded). With these faded pages in front of you, trace over the letters with the same size of pen and pay particular attention to how you have to move the pen to make different strokes. You can start out with a cartridge pen if you want, it might be easier until you learn how to "manipulate" your pen -- this will take a little while, as you have to teach your muscles to do movements you are not used to doing. If you have a light table, you could also Xerox the copies fairly dark and then use a plain piece of paper over the copies to do the tracing. Whichever technique you chose will be beneficial. Also, there are a couple books out there that can help you out.... Marc Drogin's "Medieval Calligraphy" (I think it has a new name now, so look for it under his name at Amazon.com) is one, and the one I think is best, is one by David Harris " The Art of Calligraphy, A Practical Guide to The Skills and Techniques." ISBN: 1-56458-849-1 You should be able to order either of these books from your local book store. Both books are quite reasonable in cost (at least in the United States) and they both offer some of the best explanations on how to do Medieval calligraphy. Welcome to the Scribe's List. We have a web site http://translate.thibault.org which is set up for either translators to offer their services or for those needing to have specific text wording translated into a Medieval language. I am sure there are those out there who will need to do scrolls in either hieroglyphics or hieratic writing. I have a local knight who is an Egyptian/Viking persona... so if I ever need to do something for him, I now know where to get help . Does the PCS after your name mean you came from Drachenwald?? If so, howdy compatriot... I left Drachenwald in 1986, when it was the Principality Company of Sojourners award. Below is a part that applied to our new friend from Argentina: > I might also suggest to the person from Argentina that if you are lacking some of the more techno things mentioned ( a light table for example)I would be happy to teach you how to make one, and you might also use plain old carbon paper like they use in places that still use typewriters and which can still be found in stationary stores, to create a second image copy from books by tracing with a blunt instrument on the letters and placing the carbon underneath the page and over a blank piece of paper. > > Alt Andreas von Sohren, PCS KHvS =================================================================== To unsubscribe from this list, send email to with a blank Subject: line and unsubscribe scribes in the body of the message. I am Lady Khioniya Ryseva and have recently moved back to Western Seas, Caid (Hawaii) after 5 years in the Barony of Carolingia, East Kingdom (Boston, MA). Besides scribal work my other primary interest in the SCA is cooking. I started calligraphy and illumination only in the past year and a half, so still consider myself a beginner. My primary interest is illumination and I am afraid that calligraphy is mostly a necessity to complete scrolls for me, although I find the subject interesting a physical ailment makes it difficult for me to do for more than a few minutes at a time. Any suggestions on easing hand & arm stress would be greatly appreciated! While I have done scrolls in a number of styles, my favorite is Russian/Byzantine.
