Try Golden's GAC-100 with a touch of colour added. Use several thin layers if you want raised gold. It may not be the best, but it's pretty good and one of the simplest. PVA is also very good and simple. I would suggest looking for the Gospels of Tsar Ivan Aleksandr. There is a paperback edition out by Ekaterina Dimitrovna, which I found pretty easily at Pennsic. This is one of the few books on Russian illumination that I have found - I think there are a few more out there but I can't remember what they are at the moment. Hope this helps! - --Muireann ni Riordain Barony of Ponte Alto, Atlantia > Greetings all > > I am in need of reference material for a russian scroll. I did a Russian Scroll last spring. I used the Hours of Tsar Ivan Alexander as my major source and had a friend transcribe cyrillic text - it was *lots* of fun. We only used letters we could find in the book so it's not a modern cyrillic - my friend didn't think it was a lot of fun we sat at the kitchen table making funny noises and trying to pick letters that fit - an' I kept saying "I wanna use that cool broomstick looking letter". She finally let me put it at the beginning of "augmentation". There's a tiny english gloss done in roman capitals... It lives here: http://www.ipass.net/~lindap/russian/ along with the two plates I used for illumination reference... while I wait to find time to add them to my Crosswinds page. *sigh* I don't have the information on the book with me, but I bought it from Amazon for not terribly much money (~$20?). If no-one else posts that info by the time I get home, I'll send it then. Geva yes, the calligraphy *is* my favorite part > -----Original Message----- > From: Edgar, Terry [mailto:EdgarT@JM.com] > Sent: Monday, October 02, 2000 8:30 AM > To: 'Ken Stoner'; 'scribes@castle.org' > Subject: RE: [scribes]: Hmmmmm.... > > > Greetings all > > I am in need of reference material for a russian scroll. I am not necessarily talking about gesso, but something that the leaf will stick to. << Gold leaf will stick to damn near anything - size, mordants, paint, drawing boards, cats.... If you're using real gold leaf, I'd suggest using garlic juice or gum ammoniac or gum arabic if you don't want to use gesso. A mixture of bole and glair will also work. If you're using compo leaf, use the size they sell with the kits - it's essentially a slow drying white glue.
