Could someone take a moment to clarify exactly which book you all are referring to? Is "Illuminated Alphabet" the title? Who is the author & is it a new book?<<< It just so happens that I have my copy with me today so I can make copies for an upcoming Collegium class. The vital information on it is: The Illuminated Alphabet by Timothy Noad and Patricia Seligman Publisher is Running Press Copyright 1994 ISBN 1-56138-458-5 Full cost on inside cover is $24.95, but I believe I bought mine for $19.95 It is not a new book, it's been out several years and as someone mentioned, I think it may be out of print now. I did see a copy of it recently at my local Border's, however, so there are probably still some around. Try Bibliofind or a similar search engine. Based on your description of the problem, my thought is that he failed to completely strain the mixture and he omitted an intermediate step. A dye-based pigment shouldn't be gritty. It's colored water. To use it properly, one generally has to add an intermediate step to bring the colored water from a dye to a paint. 1: dye a clothlet, then submerge the clothlet in the painting medium. 2: dye an inert white pigment, like chalk, and then add it to the painting medium. 3. Srtain the dye bath completely, boil most of the water away, and allow what's left to evaporate. Scrape the remains off the bottom of the pan and into the painting medium. Wait for the painting medium to dissolve the dye remains; you can speed it up by grinding the crystals up a bit. Hope this is helpful.
