MSS, so I am not interested if it has a lot of the same pictures I am likely to already have in other books. >> This is a paperback that is in a similar format to the Braziller paperbacks. Right page is a color photo of a complete leaf from the manuscript, at life size (for mss. that are larger than the book, stuff is cut off at the edges), and on the facing page is a wide column of text and a square of information in the wide margin. An information square example: 6 Gospel Book Helmarhausen, circa 1120-1140 168 leaves, 22.8 x 16.4 cm (9 x 6.5 in.) Ms. Ludwig II 3; 83.MB.67 Plates: Saint Matthew and Incipit Page, fols. 9v - 10 About a different manuscript page, it has the additional information Attributed to Nivardus of Milan so when a scribe is known, he is credited. In the wide single column of text, the paragraphs are pretty specific. The first time a particular kind of book is encountered, the first paragraph of text states what that kind of book is. For instance, on the example 6 above, the first paragraph tells what "Gospels" are. #3 was the first Sacramentary page in this overview volume, so it explained what a sacramentary is. The next paragraph (or the first, if the kind of ms. has already been explained), tells what is known of the provenance of this manuscript, the style, etc. The final paragraphs tell more cool stuff about this particular manuscript, or scribe, or art style, and generally puts it in context for its time or purpose. There are sometimes more than one ms. page reproduced, and sometimes more than one page of text about it, but the latter is rare. At the end of the text are the initials of the person who wrote it (TK being most common; Thomas Kren is their curator of mss. ) There were four text contributors, but no one is listed as book "author". The examples appear to be arranged chronologically, late 10th c. being the earliest. These are from their collection, so when I got it, I just glanced at it and said, "Oh, nothing new here -- just the 'good-parts version' of what I've seen for the past mmm years at the museum" But if you don't visit the Getty nearly every quarter to see the latest ms. exhibit, these are probably new. Some of these illos have been published in recent British Museum collaboration books, in the Getty calendar of a few years ago, Mira Calligraphica, and Visions of Tondal (that I'm aware of -- they may appear elsewhere, but I don't think so). There's 128 pp, so probably about 50-60 color plates. << Does it give scale of the images? yes Does it give location and date of creation? yes How many color photos, a lot or a few? a goodly number What course does the text follow and how much of it is there? historical; 1 p. Do you recommend it? Why? >> yes, particularly if you don't get to the Getty often. I was disappointed because their early Coptic ms. wasn't in the book, and some of the books with great calligraphy are represented by a page of the great illumination, but not by the matching page of stunning calligraphy. But those are sins of omission, not commission. And the paperback is only $20.
