Those of us who live too far away are WAY envious!! KHvS >> OK, we went back to the Getty yesterday and it was way cool. The illuminations on display were from a 350 year time span (more or less) and several areas in western Europe, but with a common theme of the Virgin Mary. The display on the making of medieval books was good too. I had a couple of "Oh, so THAT'S how they did that, now why don't any of the books show you?? slap the forehead, moments Also they had a case that showed the steps in illuminating and gilding a page. With calligraphy by Thomas Ingmire, so that was pretty spiff. And they had a dispaly on parchment/vellum, showing a kidskin in different stages of the process, as well as finished pieces of calf, sheep and goat with samples you could handle. Way, way neat.
