" ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 15 Jul 2000 14:14:56 -0500 (CDT) From: watkins julia k Subject: [scribes]: Christie's catlogue report: William Foyle pt.1 & 2 Both volumes are $40 each, the first ("Medieval and Renaissance Manuscripts") is a better deal: about 280 pages plus sales stuff and Christies advertising. The second part ("Early Continential Books") is about 180. All illustrations are in color; many are noted "actual size". Paperbound, pages glued not signatures, 10.5 x 8.25 inches. Glossy paper. The catalogues arrived in two days. I think the package was thrown around in the airplane (Airborn Express) because the outer corners got banged. I suppose with an aution house, speed is more important than the catalog arriving without creases. The bends are mild; they may press out on the bookshelf. For the manuscripts, I think a few have photos that aren't on the website. I just checked, the website with these photos is still up. I don't know for how long. I started with http://www.christies.com/ and clicked on "books & manuscripts" then searched on "William Foyle" to get the start of the descriptions. But the location address won't get more specific. (ie, I don't have an address to get you to the William Foyle pages 1st). The pages take a while to load onto the screen, and some styles have multiple examples. Plus some people might be most interested in certain styles. So I made an index: Abreviated from "Contents" pages: pt.1 1-2 Byzantine Ms. 3-9 Romanesque Ms. 10-19 Bibles of the 13th c. 20-28 Theology & Lifes of Saints 29-37 Liturgical & devotional Ms. 38-70 Books of Hours 71-77 Ms. in Middle English 78-83 classical literature 84-89 histories, chronicles, & fables in french 90-93 Varia 94-100 facsimiles (no photos) pt.2 is alphabetical by author (or title, if no author) "Horae" are 188-210. 231 is a block book.
