Those of you who have looked at the class listings for Pennsic may have noticed several entries for a class called "Advanced Scribal Workshop." (Last year's Beginner's class was so successful, we decided to try an advanced class this year.) Here are the details for the Advanced class. Sign-ups for this workshop will begin on Sunday, August 13, at the A&S Information Point (in front of Cooper's store). Since limited classes fill up quickly, we recommend that you get on line as early as possible! If you have any questions, please reply directly to me rather than to the list. Yours in the scribal arts, Alicia **************************************************************************** Title: Advanced Scribal Workshop Description: This intensive 5-day course (2 hours per day) will allow students with some experience in calligraphy and illumination to move beyond the "basics". Students will learn how to prepare vellum for scribal work, how to work with real gold leaf, how to improve their calligraphy and work from period exemplars. In addition, students will have a chance to learn advanced painting techniques and methods for making a scroll look more medieval. Classes will have a hands on component, so students should come prepared to participate! Some scribal experience is recommended, and preference will be given to those who are committed to attending all five sessions. Length of Class: 10 hours (5 days, 2 hours per day) Size Limit: 12 Fee: $35 - includes handouts and materials needed to participate in the hands on classes. Monday -- The Preparation of Vellum for Scribal Work The instructor will provide each student with a piece of vellum, pumice powder, and a board to work on as well as handouts and intruction on how to prepare the vellum for use. Instructor: Master Brendan Brisbane Tuesday -- Love Your Letters Are you a frustrated calligrapher? Do you do calligraphy because you HAVE to rather than because you WANT to? You're no alone! In addition to practical suggestions of ways to improve your calligraphy, students will learn a calligraphy style by looking at a period manuscript, rather than from a modern "how-to" book. Instructor: Mistress Alicia Langland Wednesday -- How to Make Your Scroll Look More Medieval Students will look at examples of medieval pages and SCA scrolls and discuss the differences in layout, outlining, use of color and materials and much more. Tips will be given to make an SCA scroll look more like the authentic pages we use as exemplars and to "go beyond" the simplifications we are often taught as beginning scribes. Instructor: HRH Dorinda Courtenay Thursday -- Advanced Painting Techniques Students will be instructed in methods which achieve three dimensionality within the forum of painting scrolls using gouache (no period pigments), watercolor paper and small liner style brushes. Students are encouraged to bring their own brushes. Students will learn how to create a gradation scale of color, determine/maintain light sources and specific shading techniques. Students are welcome to bering in-process pieces of work. Instructor: Lady Antoinette of Stormsport Friday -- Gold Leaf Students will learn how to work with real gold leaf. In no order: 1.Book of Kells 2.Book of Durrow 3.Lindesfarne Gospels 4.Travels of Sir John Mandeville (think I am remembering the title correctly) 5.Trés Riches Heures de Jean Duc de Berri, 6.Grande Heures de Jean Duc de Berri 7.The Master of Mary of Burgundy 8.Visconti Hours 9.Gottingen Model Book 10. Winchester Bible, 11. Sherbourne Missal (partly for the birds, the musical notations and the borders, a fac. & commentaries have been recently printed by Janet Backhouse, worth looking for) 12. Hours of Catherine of Cleves (Okay so I couldn't stop at 10!)) These are the ones that I most frequently reach for when looking at stuff. The Rohan Master Hours is another, as is the Petite Heures de Jean Duc de Berri. If I had to say what are the ones that no beginning scribe should be without (at least look at in the library) I would recommend the Book of Durrow because its Celtic interlacing is easiest to figure out and the Trés Riches Heures because it is inexpensive, beautiful & there are complete & nearly complete facsimiles out there allowing a fuller idea of how a book actually looked (others are good for this too but at least around here TRH is easiest to find).
