I'm surprised no one has taken a crack at this! It's a bit hard to give the perfect set of recommendations, but this is what I would buy if I needed to start out and knew what I know now. ;-) Colors I would ABSOLUTELY BUY are listed first, with colors that I consider necessary but would cut if I had little money in parenthesis. Reds: Cadmium red Medium, Madder Carmine, (Cadmium red light). Yellows: Cadmium Yellow Medium, (Cadmium yellow light) Blues: Ultramarine Blue, (Ultramarine Blue Deep) Greens: Viridian Neutrals: Lampblack, Titanium White Metallic: Gold, 2 tubes. This is an expensive palette, even at half price, so I would recommend everyone pool their money together and split the tubes. Take some of that money and buy some nice palettes, with deep wells, and divvy up the gouache. Better yet, buy a series of six-well pallets and make tints with each color in the palette. If there is still money to be spent, get yellow ochre, burnt sienna, chromium oxide, a light fast rose color, and whatever bluish-violet is in the W&N line AND is "A" or "AA" for permanence. You have to have the orange-red (Cad Red) and the blue-red (Madder Carmine) to get a decent purple (Carmine and Ultramarine) or a decent orange (cad yellow and cad red). You'll also get a mud-green that will substitute adequately for Chromium Oxide with the Ultramarine and the Cad Yellow, and a nice set of medieval greens by lightening the Viridian with the Cad Yellow or the White--choose according to the green you are emulating. I'm sure that others will have recommendations, too. I hope this is helpful to you. Your servant, Merouda Pendray. ------------------------------ End of scribes digest V2 #1509 ******************************
