I have yet to use a calligraphic fountain pen for more than a little doodling. I started with Speedball nibs at 19 cents each, lo these many years ago, and use them still. I also use the Mitchell Roundhand nibs. I found I didn't much care for the Brause, though i may not have given them enough time for me to get used to their peculiarities. And I use quills, too, but usually don't bother with the additional reservoir. The latter is more fuss and bother than I'm willing to do. And, I confess, I dip my dip pens, rather than fill them with a brush. I also have a scrap paper next to the ink well and I dip, strop, then write. It is a rhythm that works for me. Does everyone strop their pen on a piece of scrap paper before continuing after a refill? I do and always have (well, not always, but the reasons I started long ago are *very* good -- boy, do I hate having to re-do scrolls!).When I use a dipped quill (yes, I dip them too) my rythm is dip, *touch*, strop, write, where the touch is to the side of the inkwell. This reduces the size of the drop of ink in the pen which means I have to dip more often, but I never get blotches anymore! I don't have to do this with reservoired metal nibs because there I do drop the ink in with a dropper (a dropper bottle in particular) and I control exactly how much ink goes into the pen in the first place. Mitchell nibs take two drops just fine. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Douglas Brownell AKA Thomas Brownwell, Calligrapher, brownwell@home.com Dancer,Silversmith,Singer,Cobbler,...
