I've been casually looking for a period ear wax refernce to gesso. _The Art of Limming_, 1573, contains directions for making gold size that includes ingredients that we would consider used to make gesso and does in fact contain explicit direction to add ear wax in the event that the size has developed bubbles after standing. Like many period gesso receipts, the one included in Art of Limming includes glair as an ingredient; the bulk white is white lead, plaster, chalk, or a combination thereof. It may be that the ppractice of ear wax to get rid of glair bubbles bled into the practice of getting rid of gesso bubbles because lots of period receipts for gesso do include egg white. Incidentially, _De Art Illuminadi_ instructs you to let the gesso sit under a layer of water to get rid of bubbles--before applying it to your piece, of course. Just thought I'd mention it. Do you have the bibliographic information that you could post for us? (author, title, publisher, year published, ISBN, price) I'd really appreciate that, as I am always looking for primary sources! I'm *still* looking for a copy of the G=F6ttingen Model Book......(sigh) Thanks!
