I'm a beginner as I guess the most of you have gathered and I have yet to recive any comissions. So I was planning on doing a bit of illumination of my own. The thing is that my calligraphy sucks and I feel very tempted to do the text on a computer, I'd only do the illumination by hand. Now is this complete blasphmey or has anybody else tried this? She had a poem that was huge and she wanted it to fit in a 5x7 frame. Now I have been known to try to put the book of Genesis in the space of a stamp, but there was no way I was going to be able to do this. So. . . I typed it on the computer. I found a font that I liked and put a piece of thin parchment paper in the printer. It looked wonderful. I then did a nice illuminated boarder (somewhat modern). The point here is that you can print out invitations, bookmarks, book name plates, door signs for events. Almost anything on the computer and then focus your energies on the illumination. This is a great way to get started. IMHO. Michel >>> Anna Troy 06/26/98 05:42am >>> I'm a beginner as I guess the most of you have gathered and I have yet to recive any comissions. The thing is that my calligraphy sucks Good lady, here in Ealdormere we have a large number of scribes who only do illumination, as well as scribes who only do calligraphy. The illuminators create blanks and hand them on to the Signet, who then gets the calligraphers to fill in the text. I have no idea whether other parts of the SCA do the same thing, but it can't hurt to ask. We treasure our scroll blanks...not only do they mean that non-calligraphers and non-illuminators can be just as useful as scribes who do both, but in crunches when many award scrolls have to be done reallyquicklyatthelastminute, the Signet just grabs a blank and a calligrapher and the job gets done quickly. > and I feel very tempted > to do the text on a computer, I'd only do the illumination by hand. Now > is this complete blasphmey or has anybody else tried this? Of course, if you're just doing stuff for yourself and want to have a complete piece, this could turn out to be very lovely if your printer can handle whatever kind of paper you use. There are some wonderful medieval fonts available all around the Internet, especially at http://www.flightofthedragon.com/kyl/fonts/ (the maintainer of this site is the only person I have yet seen who creates fonts from actual medieval sources and makes them freely available - anyone know of any others who do this?). Or you could find a friend who does calligraphy and is willing to practice on your illumination. Lots of possibilities for you! I have decided to start learning calligraphy - and try it out on a couple of practice scrolls- but I was wondering what people thought to be the easiest styles to learn and if/where I could find resources to view? Thanks for the help. Anna, I'd wonder about the paper. I don't know if anything you can use in the printer would be compatible with what you'd need for illumination. Why don't you try just doing borders? I'm sure you'll find a use for them. You might collaborate with a scribe who could do the calligraphy for you. By the way, there are lots of people who get started doing just one thing. (I'm one of them -- swore I'd *never* learn a hand, didn't want to, couldn't make me...) If you're comfortable later, and want to try a hand, you can. Or not. Your choice.
