That they are punished if they accept compensation for their materials, time and skill?! Is any other artist in the realm forbidden to accept money for his or her work? Would a brewer be forbidden to charge for his masterfully brewed meade? Are seamstresses and embroiderers forbidden to charge for their labor and materials? Do not merchants such as Master John the Artificer have the right to charge for their work? (I know how hard and dangerous John's work is...and I assure you he charges for it.) I find it horrifying that a Kingdom would demand that their scribes work for nothing. That is certainly not a Period practice. I assure you that in Medieval times scribes and their orders were well paid by the nobility and royalty! Well, I didn't intend to start a flame war....so I apologize if I have offended anyone. I was simply astonished to hear that of all the artists and artisans in your Kingdom - some of the most talented - the scribes - are forced to practice their art without just compensation. Methinks 'tis not reasonable... My tuppence, Gwer ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 24 Jun 1998 03:16:33 -0400 From: Pete Steiner Subject: Re: [scribes]: Bookbinding glue? Hail and well met Lady Aliskye! The best bookbinding glue on the market is "PVA" or Poly-Vinyl Acetate. Most good art stores will carry it. Incidentally, PVA is also getting rave reviews as a manuscript gilding ground in Mundane calligraphy circles. Hope this helps! - -Gwer Rychen von Bern- Peter ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 24 Jun 1998 09:29:14 +0100 From: Christina Nevin Subject: [none] s*ubscribe scribes ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 24 Jun 1998 09:02:15 -0400 From: Lea Viljanen Subject: Re: [scribes]: Geographic Trends > There are people in the > Society where the nearest laurel (for anything) is 3hours away. Well, I don't want to whine 8), but in our Barony of Aarnimetsa (mundanely the country of Finland) there are no laurels at all. The nearest laurels for anything are in the neighbouring country (Sweden), which is a 8-12 hour boating trip away. But even if we had laurels, the distance between our farthest cantons would be something like 8 hours by car. But we're getting there, last 12th night we got our first peer (a Pelican). A quick interjection and then I'm right out. Sorry, Gwer. A homebrewer IS actually forbidden to charge for his masterfully brewed mead by federal law. : ( THLord Martin aus Brandenburg, Esq., a better brewer than scribe, alas... ------------------------------ End of scribes digest V2 #107 *****************************
