What I didn't mention is that for a while I was using a method of melting the wax in a separate container. (I would use an empty tea candle and vice grips to hold it over a candle flame.) This technique prooved to be somewhat expensive and messy since once I used a container for one color wax it was hard for me to use it for another. Additionally, it meant I had to use more wax than necessary, to ensure the heat didn't burn the wax and change its actual color. So, I believe there's two techniques I can use: 1. Wax with wick and another flame source to heat the wax and make a good stream of wax onto the paper. 2. Heat and melt the wax in a separate pot. (I think this choice probably can be the cleanest, I just need more suggestions on a small enough containing with a spout.) They are intended for clarifying butter, but work wonderfully for melting wax. As for burning the wax -- it means you are heating it too high, too fast. Remove it from the flame (assuming you are using a gas stove) when it starts to smoke, and then bring it back to continue melting when it has cooled slightly.
