No real idea why, unless it's the fact that the West is even more fighter-mad than other places, which sucks up guys' time. I notice that many (I believe all at this point) of the scribal events are scheduled for those areas in central and somewhat northern Caid. Would it be possible to hold the september event AT september war here in Calafia? Mind you: I AM NOT TRYING TO STIR UP THAT OLD (and tired) N vs. S argument... My concern is for the 8 or so new people that I am frantically trying to keep engaged down here. It would be good to let them see the other scribes in the Kingdom at a Calafian Event. Calafia doesn't have that many kingdom events in the next couple of months (well into 1999) except for Calafian Anniversary/Investiture.<< I agree with Cystennin that we probably should try to have something closer to his place at some point, but could we maybe try for Calafia Anniversary instead of September Potrero? I don't know about anyone else but the thought of having to drive to Calafia and THEN east for an hour or so would make me disinclined to try to make anything going on in Potrero, not to mention that Potrero in September tends to be a hot and very dusty site. Some event which is more conveniently "day trip" would be better - I'm not planning on going to the war. I usually do Heraldry consultation there at the same time, so I'll be around. Is there any interest in setting up a coordinated Scribal display? Because of my commitment to do heraldry I can't guarantee that I can be simultaneously in charge of the Scribe stuff, but I'd be there to help out. With regards to attacking the scroll backlog, I agree as well, so far I have asked that I only get assigned AoA level scrolls. That scroll may be the only thing one ever gets to see regarding ones AoA. With a peerage you get an "important" title, regalia, and notoriety that I would think would make up for whether you get a scroll or not. And if it does take years to get that scroll, then it will remind you of the early enthusiasm one has for the SCA- rather than all the work. - -brid (who wonders if someday she will get a scroll to replace the photo copy promissory for an AoA recieved mumbledy years ago) ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 18 Jun 1998 15:28:48 -0400 From: "Kenton and Dorinda White" Subject: Re: [scribes]: [Fwd: Tres Riches Heures help] >I went to amazon.com today trying to find a copy of the Tres Riches Heures . >. since my local bookstore doesn't have any. What versions of this book do other SCAdians have? How >does one author/editor compare to another? >Thanks! We have two versions of the book. The Tres Riches Heures of Jean, Duke of Berry published by Wellfleet Press, 1969, ISBN 1-55521- 398-7. Hardcover. It has 139 color plates. The text is pretty good and goes into some detail on construction, layout, and pigments. Illuminations of Heaven and Earth The Glories of the Tres Riches Heures du Duc de Berry, published by H.N. Abrams, 1988, ISBN 0-8109-1128-0. Hardcover. It has 285 color plates most of which are close ups. This book covers fewer folios, but the detail is much better than the above book. For example, the stars in the zodiac arches of the calender pages clearly have six or eight points; in our other book they just look like gold blobs. My one complaint is that it shows the full page very reduced before showing the details, and it is difficult to get a see all of the illumination on the page. It is either too small or too large. The other book compliments this one perfectly, but that's two fairly expensive books. The text is amazing in detail as well, although I don't recall there being as much info on pigments. I've always found that wars seem to be terribly full of other activities. As may be, I'm probably not going to be at Potrero in September either. I think we all need to realize that not everyone is going to be at every meet, and I do applaud the idea of scheduling a variety of meets. Maybe it would be a good idea to post all the local scriptoriums here (with an idea to doing a special article in the CP listing them all in one place rather than in the regnum?)
