I can see a few more things that may be the problem now. I was getting the condensation in the straw too. Perhaps the bulk of the moisture from my breathe is staying there as you pointed out. Also after my first try I didn't add any sweetners. etc. etc. I also am positive I'm just not getting the gold onto damp size quick enough. I can see this is going to take a bit of practice! Thanks again! Aralyn ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 18 Jun 1998 05:29:01 -0400 From: "Peter B. You mentioned grinding your own pigments from Malachite and Azurite.  Have you ever tried preparing Ultramarine from a period recipe?

Anyone who hasn't seen Randy's artwork - I urge you to click on http://www.provide.net/~randyaf  .  Wait 'til you have a couple of hours to spare.

I belonged to the mundane calligraphy guild in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania and ,after my move, joined the mundane guild in Akron Ohio. Both of the guilds were 90%+ female. There were meetings where I'd see MAYBE one other man at the meeting. I don't think it's a bias so much as maybe less men in the mundane world wish to join such guilds. Many of the male mundane calligraphers I've meet just don't show an interest in joining the mundane guild. They prefer to work in solitude. SCAdianwise, the proporation of men and women was just about equal in both places. How is it in other parts of the world? It contains 9 x 12" color closeups of the 12 calendar pages from "Tres Riches Heures." On the facing pages are a paragraph about the page as well as a small (2.5" x 4") picture of the whole page. I thought I'd post this because the book is new and because most people don't haunt children's sections in bookstores like I do. The ISBN is 3-7913-1813-6; "Adventures in Art" series, published by Prestel, 1997. I don't remember how much I paid for it, but I believe it was under $20. Also, the Medieval Women calendars often include a picture from TRH, but this is rather hit-and-miss. However, not having seen any of these, I don't know which I'd like best. I'm interested in just the illustrations, so a complete analysis of everything in them is not required. I'd like to get decent-sized pictures, with maybe close-ups of small bits, but that's not mandatory. What versions of this book do other SCAdians have? How does one author/editor compare to another? Thanks! >> Personally, I have the one with text by Pognon published by Minerva. Sorry no ISBN is on it, and I can't tell you what I paid for it as I won it in an illumination contest. While I understand that you may not be interested in the text, sometimes you are able to glean some information about technique or colour/materials that ends up making your work (if you are using it as a working model for illumination) look more like a contemporary than a copy ( there are valid reasons for both and am not judging I tend toward a contemporary look). Sometimes, author isn't as important as Editor is. Brazillier is actually a publisher, but they usually manage to get more than competent editors who will mix a good balance of tech talk with provinance and well photographed exemplars. Is this a mundane phenomena as the scribes list is not noticeably unbalanced. as ever Thorfinn, Lochac, West Melbourne, Australia >> Thorfinn, It would depend. Is the Lochac scribal population primarily female? If it isn't, then it might be because the other males need some pushing to enter into shows and competitions. I have noticed that in arts at least, females appear to be more competition oriented.
