They are fun to show off, and they make great references for future scrolls. Do you? Full-size or reduced? B&w or color? Do you also or instead always take photos? Do you bother keeping track of *when* you did a particular scroll? I've done so many pieces that I've actually been surprised when I walked into a friend's house and seen one of my works on the wall proudly displayed, having completely forgotten that I penned a scroll for them. Has that ever happened to you? . . . Hi, I am very organized (some friends may call it something else). After I finish a scroll I have 3 color copies made. One at 100% for my records, Another at 100% for my Laurel and one at 50% for my "Little Book of Michels Many Hours". I can take the little book with me to any event. On the back of the color copies I write the basic information. Who, what, where the event was held, but I also put my source of inspiration and any thing eventful about the making of the scroll. I have done over 100 scrolls in the past three years and with my records I can see improvements. Do you sleep? Do you eat? Do you work? What's the secret? Inquiring minds want to know. And have fun at Lilies. Wishing I could go. Anyway, three comments - HI, JOHANNES! For those who don't know Master Johannes von Narrenstein, many of us old-timers in the East and AEthelmearc consider him our scribal god-mentor, and I'm glad to see him on this list! Graidhne, regarding guidelines on black paper, while I've never worked on colored paper, I will suggest a trick Johannes showed me many years ago - instead of drawing the lines, use a thumbnail (or stylus, if you're a nail biter like I used to be) to lightly rule the lines. This creates a small indentation which you may have to set your light just right to see, but it needs no erasure. 'Hannes, regarding the books with gold and silver on black paper, have you tried using Sumi silver instead of Testor's? I know you must cringe to use model paint; Sumi is water based and works very nicely. I've calligraphed with the gold quite successfully, after adding a little gum arabic. Our local university art store carries Sumi metallics (red gold, yellow gold and silver) in shallow pots about 3" in diameter for about $12-$15. I like to do some of everything, so what I'm currently doing depends on what style suits the recipient. I like variety. And I don't use bristol board because you can't trace through it. And I'll keep using tech pens to outline because they work better for me. I figure it's better to be neat with the pen than sloppy with the brush. See, not being an artist, I don't feel compelled to play by the rules...I just do it the way that works best for me and I figure as long as I use the best tools I can and make my best effort, that's all I can do. ;) Miri ------------------------------ End of scribes digest V2 #49 ****************************
